    About the rep system

I have an idea. But first, some questions on the matter. (These are related.)

1.Why do we have negative rep? I've been talking about the system at another forum, and I've heard now of a place where there simply is no negative rep. It made me wonder, why do we have it in the first place? I could easily be shot down and have this topic either locked or forgotten, but I'm asking anyway. Really. I honestly see no reason. If there is one I've been missing, please feel free to explain it to me, but it's just something I'm curious about. (enough to make a lengthy post about it :P)

    Thoughts?

Yes, but this is really only usually reserved for trolls and such. And there are *Ahem* "other" methods of conveying such. Either way, is it really needed?

        Yes.

        Is positive rep really necessary?

        No.

It's silly to say: "You guys can only say nice things to each other."

I suppose that's true. Never mind this then. Delete it, lock it, whatever.

              Re: About the rep system

Basically it makes you be the person the pav wants you to be, you cant just waltz in here and start flaming everyone, or you'll get a ton of negative rep(and banned), if you have 2 people, each been here a year, same # of posts, and one has about 300 more rep points then the other...whats the logical conclusion?

The rep system, as the Wiki explains, is basically a global punishment system, most people do not want to get negative reps, especially for everyone to see, so they change, I know personally theres been some posts by people towards me where I just wanted to go off on them, but I know it would have given me a ban warning and a ton of negative rep, so I held my tongue, which looking back was a good thing for everyone, and you can't get rid of negative rep so you really have to watch what you say in here

Some people dont even care about the rep system, I myself try to get as much as I can, when I can I'll try to help someone out expecting a rep, if I dont get one...oh well, try again But the point of having negative rep is if you flame someone, then you should suffer some kind of punishment, and whats worse then having all those rep points you worked hard to earn being taken away besides getting banned?

Also since giving out negative rep usually results in getting a retalitory negative rep the system checks itself.

true, in most instances people feel they dont deserve the rep, even though in others eyes they do, and amidst the frustration, they childishly retaliate without thinking.

That never bothered me. I can always count on Funk to give me positive rep just for existing, so I come out ahead.

(EDIT): Deleting this post as my comments were scathing and rather unnecessary.

I'll simply say that I think "revenge rating" is a real problem when negative rep can be given by anyone for any reason.

                          Just about everyone.

I don't think I've ever given out neg and not gotten it back.

But have you given neg and not gotten it in return?

                            thats the question.
