Though the Playstation 3 has barely launched, there's already talk of a Playstation 4, according to Sony's Vice President of Technology, Paul Holman. Holman clarified with SmartHouse of Sydney that Sony will launch a PS4, but no sooner than 2010. "To say that there will be no PS4 because of [recent managment changes within SCEI] is a bit far fetched." said Holman

According to Holman, it's too soon to be speaking of the PS4 as game developers are just discovering that the PS3 has "more processing headroom than they initially anticipated." Holman also said that Sony plans to release a series of firmware upgrades, similar to the PSP, that will enable the PS3 to become more media-center orientated and allow for third-party applications and hardware "such as interactive controllers," like the Nintendo Wii remote.

Well, microsoft already mentioned they are planning their next xbox right now, but obviously won't have it released for a good while.

I don't think they said they're working on it yet just that they do plan on making another. Which was just to respond to people saying they'd go software only when they made Kaz CEO or whatever. Although the fact he mentioned the year 2010 kinda makes that supposed 10 year life cycle for PS3 seem unrealistic.

The fact that a company will be making another console is not exactly shocking news. I'm sure Nintendo and Microsoft will be doing the same.

I'll guarantee you that Sony is NOT going to be the company to release their next system first. Sony actually intends to get 7 or 8 years out of the PS3 before the launch of the next system (someone at one point said 10 years). Anything mentioned right now is pure speculation. Sure, they probably have already started the planning phases for the next system, but it isnt going to be coming any time soon. I guarantee atleast 6 years before the release of their next system, unless the PS3 bombs big time, and PS3's (as well as Wii's) are still flying off the shelves when they enter stores (atleast around here).

Personally, unless i see some HUGE graphical leap in PC gaming in the next couple of years, i honestly dont see a reason to go past the PSWii60.

I'll likely get a PS4 whenver it comes out, but i doubt i'm buying MS's or Nintendo's next console.

Food for thought: Nintendo cannot make its next system backwards compatible unless they use the almost the EXACT same control scheme as they use for the Wii. Atleast that is what i think, but feel free to come up with ideas.

Since the Wii controller is wireless, allowing people to use it on their next console for Wii games would be extremely simple. its not like the thing requires ports built into the console to take up more room. I dont see nintendo moving away from the Wii-type controller anyways. If anything, thats the type of controllers we'll see on every single system in the next generation after they saw how successful the remote was for Nintendo.

The next generation of systems cannot even be considered right now, because we have three completely different platforms on the market right now, and whichever one "wins" will be the trend everyone follows next time. Sony has their media center thing, they want the PS3 to be the center of everything in your house. They see the PS3 not at a game machine, but as a piece of home theater equipment. Microsoft has their focus on online games, and the communities that form around it. The Live Arcade is a big part of their strategy as well, giving smaller developers the ability to release games for a major console that they would never have the chance to otherwise. Nintendo has a completely new control scheme unlike anything we've ever seen before, that lets everyone get into games again. The current generation of gamers can only keep the industry going for so long. as the games get more expensive to make, you have to increase the userbase as well. Nintendo is doing that.

Of course, everyone is working on their next generation graphics technology, but everything else will have to wait to be started, until they see the direction the industry goes in. Well, except Nintendo. They're not much for following anyone's lead lately. Except Apple's. How many weeks do you think it'll be until they somehow manage to produce a Wii Lite?
