Exerpt from the Game Manual:
Experience Points – Experiance Points (XP) can be gained in a variety of ways in DiD:W, and are outlined below.
Plot Battles – These are unavoidable battles that are meant to hasten the plot. They can be in the form of Character vs Character battles, or they can be Boss battles. The XP awarded in these situations is based upon the difficulty of the battle.
Random Battles – These are easily avoided battles set in specific areas that allow you to fight less powerful monsters in order to gain XP for those who like the Random Battle XP method vs the Exploration Method. All Random Battle areas are outlined in the game, and a list can be found in the Christopher Training Arena. Random Battle XP is based upon difficulty of battle.
Event Battles – Later in the game, you will encounter an arena-like dungeon known as the Event Temple. In the temple, you will be able to participate in several repeatable battles known as Event Battles. Before fighting any of these battles, you will be able to look at the enemies in the battle, as well as how much XP you will get from the battles.
Training Battles – Fight Takara for a set amount of XP in the Training Arena. However, she is a powerful adversary, so be wary of taking this route for XP gain until you are high-enough levels.
Puzzle XP – This type of XP is determined by the puzzles you will encounter in many of this game’s dungeons. Based upon “Right/Wrong Answers,” Puzzle XP is based upon a set XP that will decrease with each wrong answer that you will make. The set amount of XP is based upon Puzzle difficulty.

For example- If an item is on the path you have to take in a dungeon, it will yield a lower Exploration XP then something you would have to go three floors away from the dungeon exit to find. Hidden towns and dungeons also yield Exploration XP, but it is sometimes perilous to seek such treasures. Tread with caution.
