Re: Wander - Full Game Progress Report

Well, all right. It's time for a new update.

I have been checking out RPG Maker XP a bit lately, and that is a very cool maker, I must say. I am still drawn back to RPG Maker 3 though to finish Wander before I begin any new endeavours seriously.

I have made some very good progress over the last couple of days.

I have made many events that you encouter in your home before beginning your experience in the cave. Most decorative items which come premade in the house model I am using have an invisible event attached to them, which convert them into events. In the house there are twelve or thirteen events, I believe. You will not be allowed to exit your house until you have obtained the items that you need to move on.

Once you leave your home, you must follow a map, which you received in your house and obtain access to the special dungeon. Both the field and the ascii map are completely done.

So, now the beginning of the game goes like this:

    Title Screen

You find yourself in your house where you search around a bit. (events have been added since last time)

Find the container (this event is totally complete now)

    Cut Scene

You make your way following the map to the special dungeon. (this is totally playable now)

You enter the special dungeon. (this is totally working now)

    Let the adveturing begin!!

Hope you enjoyed reading this mini-update. Any feedback is always welcome.
    Have a wonderful day.

Just thought I'd drop in and say that sounds like a great idea. Having a little puzzling right at the beginning will help the player warm up for the real adventure. I'll look forward to hearing more about the game.

Re: Wander - Full Game Progress Report

          Hey everybody,

It's been quite a while since the last update. Today was very nice though, having some time to tweak and tinker a bit with Wander. I haven't done that in oh so long.

Anyway, today, as I was playing through some things, I realized that there was this one area that was just too big with nothing going on, so I scaled down the map to something much more user friendly, and I'm thinking of adding several events there to keep the player interested.

I was also thinking about adding little bonus items. I was thinking perhaps of having tiny adventurer's badges hidden throughout the game. Depending on how many of them you are able to find, the ending to the game would be different.

Right now, I'm just glad to have a few moments on this day off to get a chance to play around with things.

So, yes, I'm still working on this game, and I'm glad to have the chance to give at least a several sentence update today.

I hope you're all doing well. I appreciate all of you here at the Pavilion.

Re: Wander - Full Game Progress Report

            Hey guys,

I must say that 1ce's LP (1st episode) of Daniel's Quest III has gotten me a bit excited about RPG Maker 3 again, and I have had some time this week to get some work done on WANDER.

I pulled out all of the notes, played through what I've made, wrote out new notes, made some changes, created some new treasure items, thought out some new ways to make gameplay easier for the player, and just generally had a little fun getting immersed in this mini-hobby yet again. I'm really grateful for my wonderful wife, who hasn't minded my game-making.

I've been a little frustrated by some of the ways that RPG Maker 3 screws up the text in treasure descriptions and choice branches, but I'm finding little workarounds to get things to appear as I want them to.

I'll keep you all updated. Have a great week!

Cool! I'm glad to hear that you're still plugging away.

If you don't mind, could you tell me what your workaround to the problem with item descriptions was? I tried several things, but couldn't discern a pattern in what it cut off and when...it seemed almost random to me!

Glad to see this is still on, as you're a master of creatively using RM3's resources way beyond their conventional limits and I can't wait to see the kinds of puzzles you're putting together.

Which one is your personal favorite, so far?

Re: Wander - Full Game Progress Report

                  Ωbright,

Thanks for the comment my friend.

Well, I really need the item descriptions (for treasure items) to be as filled as possible as they help give the player clues. The frustration was that the screen where you type the info for the description seems to give the game-maker the feeling that a certain number of characters can fit. In reality, only about one third of those are actually visible in game play. So, it basically boils down to actually playtesting the event and then modifying the contents by paring things down to just the necessary info.

I'll check to see exactly how many characters fit and let you know when I find that out.

Another thing was that when I used a choice branch as a "you are here" type of map for the multi-level dungeon. The characters automatically center themselves, messing up the display royally. This was an easy fix because it just amounted to adding an equal number of spaces after each dungeon level name.

                  Wavelength,

                  Thanks for the support man.

One of my favorites ( I guess it's not really a puzzle, but...) is when you have to find four leaves. Once you have found them, you place them in a leaf crusher. The leaf crusher then dispenses two vials filled with this leaf powder. You then add the powdered leaves into a bottle of liquid that changes color depending on how many powdered leaf vials are added. Make sure the read the instructions on the bottle carefully, as not doing that could lead to a quick death.

Re: Wander - Full Game Progress Report

                    It's been forever it seems.

These days life has been so busy. It's rare to find even an hour to myself.
Family, work and church take priority, but I find myself missing my game
sometimes, and just wishing it were finished. I'd love to just sit back and play the finished product, but yeah, it's not finished, so...

Tonight, I'm going to tinker a bit. I'll keep you posted.

All of my Wander notes are right here in front of me next to the TV.

Re: Wander - Full Game Progress Report

I always used to have grand plans and checklists, and when I got off of work, I would sit there, exhausted, and just stare at the TV. @_@

Quite often though, when I was "just sitting down to tinker", I wound up finishing half the game! Go figure.

                      Good luck!!

Re: Wander - Full Game Progress Report

                        Well....progress, yes, really.

I have played and taken notes, and fixed, and added.
Now I have only put in a couple of hours lately, but I'm very happy to have a little time to work on Wander. (I must admit, after watching some of the Let's Plays that Draygone has done of Obright's game, I have been a bit inspired).

The game is at 75% memory consumption, and there is oh so much more left.
Most of the memory has been spent on the appearance of the field maps. I'm very proud of them. However, I am still trying to think of events to fill them with to make them interesting and interactive.

I have been working on a way to keep track of where you are in the intricate dungeon by using a storyteller to help you track your position.

I have also been working on the journal entries (which are mini-storytellers as well.)

Don't know when I will finish, but this game is still underway for those of you interested.

                        little by little, right?

Glad to hear it's still coming along. Do you think you'll manage to do everything you want within the memory limit?

                            Hey everyone.

I haven't been on here in what seems like ages.

I still have Wander on my memory card, but I haven't worked on it in a long time. Family, work, and life have taken over.

It's always in the recesses of my mind.

                            Just checking in!

I hope you manage to get back to this project eventually, though.

It has been in my thoughts, too...and so have you.
