Hello everyone, i am the latest newbie to the pavillion as well as a newbie to the rpg maker game area. I own rpg maker 3 and im 48% done with my second game. im getting the hang of it all but i still suck in stat basing. i either end up with weak characters of strong monsters... ANYWAY I am 17, a senioor in high school (finnaly), and im probobly going to go to collage and major in game design so i figured rpg maker 3 would be a good warm up. so with all that out of the way, i hope to make awsome games to share with the community.

If I may offer you some advice here...Originally posted by Kai-sin View PostANYWAY I am 17, a senioor in high school (finnaly), and im probobly going to go to collage and major in game design so i figured rpg maker 3 would be a good warm up.
You may want to reconsider a "game design" degree in favor of a traditional Computer Science bachelor's degree from a four-year university. I'm currently halfway through completing my own CS bachelor's degree and plan, as you do, to enter the industry full-time post-graduation, so I've been researching the preparation bit for the past ~seven years.
It's my finding that you're, in some cases, more likely to be hired with a CS degree than with a "game design" degree. And then you'll have a more generic degree to fall back upon in case you're not immediately able to find an entry-level position in gaming.
You may want to take a look at Tom Sloper's site; he's a guy who's written quite a bit on the subject.
Good luck to you.

Re: Newbie rpgmaker
Howdy there.
I'm not what you might call an expert at balance issues, but I know a few things that are pretty much dogma at this point.
- Work out your character stat growth on paper until you're happy with it, and then apply it to your characters. I made some templates for that a long time ago, and they're right here. How you pace the heroes' stats is completely up to you, but...
- Pick hero stat curves and STICK WITH THEM. Always try to tweak monster stats to fit the characters', not the other way around. Otherwise you've just made the entire battle mechanic up to that point obsolete. You'll have to start all over again.
Well good luck to you, and I'll see you around!
