Changing an Event's graphic mid-execution

Has anyone figured out a way to change the graphic of an event mid-execution without having to do variable/page/autorun shenanigans? For the life of me I couldn't find a simple "change event graphic" command. Am I just missing something or is this an unfortunate restriction?

I think this is an unfortunate restriction. Outside of autorun shenanigans I can't find any workarounds. Quite the oversight.
