    Reference Threads Discussion/Nomination

    --bump--

So I find myself linking to my mapmaking guide a lot. Despite it being linked to in Answers to Basic Questions I'm considering stickying it as well (like with Page's Tricks to Spice Up Your Games.) But I'm sure I'm prejudiced about it, so, I want to get opinions. Do you think this is worth stickying?

For the record, do you think anything else should be tacked up here? Go crazy, if we get too much stuff we could always ask an admin for a special "resources" sub-forum...RPGM3 is still the major attractor for new people, and frankly I think it needs special treatment. Your thoughts?

I'm all for stickying that. It is a good reference tool.

Mmmbop. But my major questions are A. Are there other referance tools you think are worth stickying? and B. Are there enough that you think a referance subforum would be worthwhile?
I'll refrain on stickying this while it becomes the subforum chat thread. Or I could just make a subforum chat thread xD

It would be great to somehow compile all of the threads regarding variables into one comprehensive variable thread...somehow.

That could be easy to do, but I'm not sure which threads actually have major contributions. I can only remember the guides I made, y'know? So if someone has spent a signifcant ammount of time writing about variables link it here and I can make that sexy variable thread.

Well, here's a good start anyway.

            Crythania's variable thread:
            http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/...ght=varialbles

            Crimson Knight's variable thread:
            http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/...ight=variables

            Obright's Variable single post:

And done. Althogh copy spazzed out on me. There should be a "preview copy" or something.

                Re: Referance Threads Discussion/Nomination

Ummm, maybe I'm late, or stupid, or both, but wouldn't it be easier (and less cluttered at the top of the page) if we stickied a thread linking to a reference page of some sort? Like maybe create a master list of some sort and link to that?

I never really like the "stickies" all that much but I've asked some questions that had links posted as replies and they were very helpful. I think making a "new" page or just updating the old FAQs page might be better in the long run, no?

                  Re: Referance Threads Discussion/Nomination

i would strongly suggest having a list of threads to the best topic discussions. i find that i also reference alot of past posts when explaining things like story creation, or how to achieve a certain event. this would be a good idea for all the rpg makers, not just the 3rd.

if you like the idea i will collect a list of candidate threads and you can go through and choose which most deserve recognition and add the thread links where ever you feel they belong. if you do this, i would strongly suggest you lock the topics you link to prevent necroposting.

                    Re: Referance Threads Discussion/Nomination

I could just link to them, I just wanted to have the most important ones stickied.
I'll ask Valk about a subforum, but in the meantime, Karr, it'd be great if you could find threads. Remember, for now we're only thinking RPGM3 (as thats all I can do -_-)

                      Re: Referance Threads Discussion/Nomination

after reviewing everything ive changed my mind. rather then have links it should be enough for people to do a search to find what they need. in the last 10 pages i found tons of good advice, and the advice improves as you go along. it maybe overly cluttered if we include a bunch of links. since each question is different there is often a custom solution to be found.

instead we should condense the stickies down. i found them very annoying having half a page worth of stickied information. Take the information out of the stickies, keep the information thats useful and put it all into one master sticky tips and tricks, or in a second one called rpg maker resources. quote the users of each idea or do a thank you contribution at the end if credit is a problem.

there is a lot of pointless posts that detract from the stickies purpose so those should be cleaned up to keep it short, relevant and on topic. dont forget that the purpose of a sticky is to get relevant information across to all users as concisely as possible. think like what we had in the museum topic, all the information was there and sorted in a way thats user friendly.

Thanks for the catch, Postulate. I'll admit with Firefoxs spell checker I've been a bit more negligent about what it can't cover.

And Karr, that idea may work too. I'll think about it.

[EDIT: I've talked to Valk. He mentioned that they could be placed in the tutorial section...and locking them doesn't seem to be that big of an injustice, as long as they've ran their course. What do you think about this plan? And do we keep the commentary that existed before the lock or just copy the singular posts? Of course, I'm still a little bit paranoid about copying posts. o.O]

I think that the unrelated banter should be removed, just to make the posts more concise and easier to read, and to make it easier to find the stuff that is actually being referenced.

just copy posts or steal text out of them and give credit (like a quote i guess).

we definably do not need all the yapping in a topic that is newly made to be a guide for new people. i dont think people will take offense if we snip it up like a magazine and turn it into something more useful.

we have a tutorial section? how would that work out?
