    Scurvy Dogs

    -Hello everyone...

-I've been reading these forums for a long time now and i'm finally ready to release my contribution to the RPGM community...

    -Enter... Scurvy Dogs

-this is has been basically a two year project... i started when RPMG2 came out in my tenth grade year... development all but stopped in eleventh grade... and it's finally come to shape now during my twelth grade year... granted... it's truly only a demo... but it's taken me this long to make it what i've really wanted it to be... through lots of trial and error, short attention spans, and WTF?! moments...

-Now, a little about the game...

-Scurvy Dogs is a simple game with a simple premise with simple mechanics...

-Jump, punch, and collect your way the the 7 levels and a finally a boss battle...

-It takes full advantage of the awesome jump-while-moving system that Jugem thought up oh so long ago... (many thanks)

-I tried to make the levels as detailed and interesting as possible... (okay not as possible but i did put a lot of effort...

-And the best part is... i've made it as bug and glitch free as i can

-I will be submitting the game tomorrow (January 19, 2006) in the Submission forum under Demos at about 3:30-5:00 PM....

-I hope you're all ready and willing to give an original RPGM2 platformer a play...

I'm in love with the title name itself.

I agree 100% with you there. I loves the name. With a name like that it can't be too bad. I'd take a swing at it.
I had to change accounts. I'm here now - http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/member.php?u=1475

Well crap. I have tried for a hour to get my stupid ps2 to read the max drive disk...but with no luck.

So I won't be able to play your game....

            I hate the max drive.....

              well... crap..

sorry to here your max drive's not working.... thanks for trying though..

i didn't buy a max drive 'cause i got too scared from all the horror stories it read when i was finally ready to buy a file transfer device... i stuck with a sharkport cause it seemed more reliable and cheaper...

i hope it starts working again for you...

i was just wondering if you ever got around to playing the demo....

                  if nay.. okay...

if yay.. awesome... i hope you'll tell me a little bit of what you thought....

if not... i'll have to find you, crack open your skull, and suck out the sweet nectar of your opinion.... which i will thank you heartily for... unless you die from the skull cracking.. then... hmm.....

sorry.... just got up... and felt like saying that...

                    Re: Scurvy Dogs

I played your demo to the 2nd level and well I liked it, but only to a certain extent. Something that I suggest you work with is the whole jump while moving thing. While I like the idea, it doesn't really work well for me. Just about everytime I run and hit the square button at a ledge, I sometimes don't make it to the other platform and would have to start all over. Is there anyway to make the jumping system work while holding forward on the D-pad and then hitting the square button? If you could fix that, then the game would definitely benefit from it.

There was also something strange about falling too in that whenever I'd fall, I'd fall as if the character was a massive boulder. It's not much to complain about, but it does look a little bizarre when it happens.

I'll try to fit some time into playing more of your demo, but just try to fix those irritations. All in all, the game certainly does look good and it would have beem such a shame if I didn't play this.

                      Re: Scurvy Dogs

                      thanks a whole lot...

i know exactly what you're talking about when you said the button doesn't seem to be responding...

i had a hard decision to make and i wasn't sure what to choose....

on the one hand..... i made it like it is currently..... not consecutively resposive.... i did this because i was trying to fix a problem that kept happening to me when i played....

the way the jump system is set up originally works perfectly... you can jump ledge to ledge without a problem... but there was this really annoying thing that occurred when stepping near to a wall... if you hit the square button at a certain point (which happened to me more often than you'd imagine) the flag for the jump script would turn on and not turn off until you took a step... which means you would be forced to take a step back so you could jump up onto the above platform but the flag would still be on so the character would perform the directional jump script..... causing some random deaths as well..

so, i added two lines of script in the action script that checks if [] was hit... this made the script wait 10F after the flag was on and then turned it off..... this is what causes the finicky jumping......

i just wasn't sure.... now, in retrospect.. i think i should have let it be (with the odd jumping)... i just really didn't like that... and thought you guy's would've found it annoying.. choosing between two evils.... always a good time...

                      retrospect's a *****....

but as i've typed this... i've been developing a new way that might work as to preventing the out-of-place directional jump....

we'll see... and if it works... i'll submit the new version....

thanks for playing... and your critques....

                        Re: Scurvy Dogs

I got to play it and I think is very well done, all except the previously mention jumping issues.

Your level designs are really neat and well detailed.

The special effects are really good too.

If you can fix that jump issue, it will turn out to be a great little game.

                          Well...

I've worked out those kinks that were so bothersome....

I thought they were just going to have to stay there for a long time.....

But, after two days of rigorous brainstorming, tinkering, and trial and error, I've come up with a solution that works!

So, if you're planning to download or you already have.... I suggest you go and get the second release of Scurvy Dogs.....

(I couldn't EDIT in the submissions forum so I had to create a new reply which for some reason didn't acknowledge the bold and color codes... so...)

I hope you like it.... and thank you for all the replies thus far....

                          Sorry for the inconvenience......

                          -El Mastodon....

                            It's just as well.

I still have not made time to check this out.

I grew up with a 350 pound Saint Bernard and look forward to Doggy Style antics with RPGM2.

                            Peace.

                            MOO!

Well, you may be just a bit dissappointed... not too many (okay almost none) doggy antics....

                              sorry Rodak....

But you do get to punch one dog in the face....

                              that's about it......
