Yeah, I always made world maps with the outside dungeon editor, for towns I just made really small houses grouped together.

I'm probably going to be going back to RPGM1 this year. A friend of mine gave me a bunch of PS1 memory cards for Christmas. I figure I've got plenty more ideas appropriate for RPGM1.

The lack of keyboard support is a pain until you get used to it.

I like all but one song, personally. The song is one of the town songs, which is supposed to be used in a church. Can't stand it. Other than that, my only problem with the choices given to you are... Actually, the problem is the choices that aren't given to you. There's not enough variety. Only a few battle themes, no real panic theme or "evil villain making his speech" themes... You wind up with songs repeated in different instances, like an exploration Tower song suddenly being used for the evil villain, or the "Enemy 1" boss theme being used as a panic theme/evil villain theme.
With the exception of actual battle music and sound, you can change the tempo and other elements of the music and sounds. Almost any song could become as dark and brooding or fast paced as you want with just a few adjustments to how it played. Sure, we see the same feature in RPGM2, and I think the inability to do this in RPGM3 is a major drawback.

Yeah I know about changing the song speeds in RPGM1, but it's so obvious when it's the same song you heard playing in that last boss battle, only slower. At least in RPGM2, you could change the pitch.

Anyway, I'm not too thrilled with the default world map either. I still use it, though. I'll have levels that link town to dungeon to town, but the world map would be for quickly travelling between places visited, without having to use tacky "warp points". Sorta like in Mario RPG, where it had a (much more interesting-looking) point-and-click style world map with the occasional traveling level.

Of course, that won't mean I won't sometimes use a custom world map instead. If remaining custom sprites allow, Ill even use custom sprites to represents towns/caves/etc. Sure one can't really do anything like an airship to travel from place to place, but then the default world map's airship isn't anything special anyway.

Wouldn't it be boring just traveling between Towns? No Fields?

There'd be dungeons like caves, forests, and mountains. Just not open fields.
