Re: RPG Maker 4. what should it have?

I'd be all over an RPGM2 "Special Edition" (why'd they bother putting Special Edition in RPGM3's title, again?). What we need is an RPGM2 with...

    * Some more realistic models along with the cartoony
    * A much MUCH lower building block constraint
    * Furthur horizons (seriously, seeing only 14 blocks in front of you is pretty bad)
    * More musical options (where are the brass instruments?)
    * More monster models available for use outside the DBS
    * More animations for the character models (you know, like give them all attacking animations if we wanted to use a CBS)
    * And of course, a much easier user interface
    * Oh yeah, I want to be able to hold backspace to delete a line instead of having to press it over and over again
    * A better way to import pictures (who actually has a camera with Picture Paradise)
    * The ability to show variables onscreen with all the other text options (the Text Box option, or in a VFX)
    * Coordinates in the VFX editor
    * Cow. How can we have a farm without a cow?
    * Get rid of the tile movement and give us full, responsive 360-degree movement
    * No more constantly-walking characters, unless of course we wanted them
    * Events being able to move around in the air.
    * Being able to not only zoom and rotate the camera, but tilt it, turn it upside-down, lock in place, and move around freely without having it focus on the player
    * Get rid of the blur
    * Being able to carry all character stats and items over to a new file if we wanted to do a "new scenario"

Yup, an RPGM2 with these sort of changes would rock.

Re: RPG Maker 4. what should it have?

I think one thing RPG Maker 4 needs, after reading all of the entries in this topic, is a Character/Animal Editor. One of the most limiting thing to me in any RPGM is the character models. RPGM1 Anime Maker was way too difficult for me, I mean I can draw cool stuff in MSPaint, but drawing it 9 times and in movement was hard for me. RPGM2 was a lot easier, but still not as satisfying. I know every one has been saying this, like I said I read all the posts, but I really emphasis this. I am disappointed to find out you can't have enemy graphics as your main characters. Oh well...

I see a couple people who want a music editor. I dont think that will ever happen due to legal reasons, but that would be a cool thing. Maybe not exactly a whole music editor, but a theme editor. I would love to make theme songs for all of my main characters and a theme for the end of a battle. (Like Final Fantasy's fanfare). When I say theme, I mean like a short 10-30 sec song. Probably not likeable, but it is really cool to thing of in a RPGM game.

If they are going to do graphics like RPGM3, I would like to see a weapon editor. RPGM3 is the first console game where you can see your characters in battle, and I see that there are different weapon graphics, but still limited. Listen to my idea! Imagine RPGM3's field editor, you just draw and it comes to life, imagine if you could draw weapons and color them and they come to life. It's a small thing, but I am a man who likes his weapons in his RPG's. I would make tons of cool weapon graphics. I am disappointed to see no spears in RPGM3.

When I first got RPGM1, I have to admit, it was hard for me to use. But I read a FAQ online, and then I saw how easy it was. I think the switch system was really easy and effective, my only problem with RPG Maker's event system is that the dialogue in my games was very boring. I love the Fire Emblem style dialogue of RPGM3. I just wish, as many others do, it had a VFX editor. I would have a lot of fun with this. (So would Bigfoot, I know he loves VFX). RPGM2's event editor was way to complicated for me. Switches, flags, variables. It seemed that you had to have some background in video game coding and programming to be a master at this, whereas RPGM1's event system was easy to learn and master, consuming half the time it would take to master RPGM2. So in, "RPG Maker 4", they should just go back to the switch system. That's just my opinion.

After looking over the pictures of the Field and Towns in RPGM3, I have to say that you could make a lot of beautiful sceneries. I see a lot of people saying that they want different time settings. I thought RPGM1 was somewhat diverse for it fantasy and then some. Although few in quanity, it was a good idea to add those extra prehistoric and futuristic monsters, characters, and maps. I would love to see this in the sequel only with more quanity. Pretty much already said.

A vehicle editor would be cool, but maybe too much. The standard vehicles for each time period would be enough for me. It would be cool to have it where if you have an airship, you can actually go inside the airship.

Portraits of a character next to their name in the menu screen would be cool, but kind of goes against what I said about a character editor. I suspose it wouldnt be needed, but a plus nonetheless.

As for techs and skills, I was often frustrated with the lack of capabilites you could do with RPGM1. A lot of the skill editor traits (such as HP Drain, recover hp during battle, attack +1) would make for cool tech/magic spells. I think the limit of what you could do with techs and magic kind of limited the uniqueness of an individual character. Who actually casts Sleep on enemies anyway? I would like to see a wider variety of magic/skill options without linking it with scripts and variables. Some examples of what I would like to see is, Steal, Throw, Jump, Summon, Guard, Berserk, Doublecast, etc. (A lot of FF skills, I am aware).

I think it's cool that Valk sends this to Agetec. I hope they listen..

RPGM3 is special edition because of the hard drive support that wasnt in the japanese version.

RPGM1 NEEDED variables. Without variables, you couldn't easily have an event check if a player found 10 apples, or 20 apples. Without variables, you could barely keep track of HP if you used a custom battle system.

Also, Switches and Flags are the same thing. They just renamed switches to flags in RPGM2.

It's not that you needed background in programming to use RPGM2. Stuff like variables are really easy to understand once you learn what they do. It's just that they made having to do everything in RPGM2 far more complex than necessary.

The ability to make character models from scratch would be cool.
Edit there face, hair, body type, skin color, outfit, ect.

Then just an add on to RPG maker 3 would also be cool, adding new characters, monsters, and items.

i may disagree with you on making the character models from scratch. sure, it'd be cool, but it may be very hard to do if they implemented that. something that would make it suck a little bit as far as i'm concerned.

unless it's handled properly you'd need some prior experience with elements like that.
the legends have returned...whenever i can finish these, lol.

I Think that the Monster and Character editors should be similar to PSO's character creation, with more customization. You pick a basic model, edit the colors, decide the proportions, and select different clothes and stuff.

It should also be user friendly, like RPGM1, and content that wasn't limited to medieval, or Sci-fi.

A Music editor would rock too.

Not necessarily. There's a new "morphing" technology on the market that's used in character creators like the one in Tiger Woods PGA golf and a few sega tennis games. The premise is that you have a base skeletal model, you select it's body points (face, cheeks, forehead, chest, stomach, etc.), and then using a slider you morph the body to any shape and size. This was an incredibly simple tool to use but it was also incredibly powerful. The ability to make a custom model that, in theory, was ALWAYS different from someone elses model (and in 5 minutes to boot) is an awesome feature that could easily be placed in any game using today's current technology. Even older games like 2000s Black and White used body morphing to subtly alter and shape character models.

Anyways, all I really want is for EVERYTHING to be able to register to a variable. The weather, buttons, hp, time of day, every value that rpg maker uses should be able to be tied to a variable. This should allow for more powerful ways to script. Also, there needs to be more condition handlers instead of the standard "If this item is equipped, if you're in this location, if you have certain gold, etc." There should be some like "If direction face, if number of monsters faced, etc."

I don't know about direction faced, but one could assign a variable to monsters faced in RPGM2. Simply choose a variable, and increase it every time a monster is encountered.

I'd really like to see the next RPGM series on the PS3. With Blue-ray drive discs, the information they could pack onto one would be immense. This would allow what a lot of people want...many different types of time periods and corresponding models to create an infinite number of RPG's.

Yeah I really think they should have a character editor. somthing along the lines of The Sims 2. you could make just about anybody in that (I've made characters that bear a VERY close resemblance to friends and my self). of course this wouldn't work for non-humanoid models, but for the humans it'd be the best option possible.

it wasn't possible this generation but the PS3 will be able to hold more data and it has a harddrive so I think that such a feature would be possible.
