Re: What annoys you in most RPGs?

ESPECIALLY with magic.. does anyone actually ever run out of mp in games?
All the time, if I'm not conservative. And by conservative, I mean saving all the MP for healing and for nuking the boss at the end of the level, however weak my mages are at physical attacks. I really don't like limited magic power. Sure there should be some limits, especially for healing spells. But if you give me a mage that only does 1/10 the damage the buff warriors dish out, I better have plenty of magic power in order to use those necessary magic spells.

Of course, I wouldn't like the idea of having the problem fixed by giving me an unlimited supply of mana potions.
    Bosses should have mad HP
I don't mind bosses having a decent amount of HP, but they better be over relatively quickly. No battle should last over 10 turns. Unless they're excessively quick turns, like in Tales of Symphonia.
And for final bosses with multiple forms. for my idea how about the final boss to have 10 different forms. but you only fight 2 forms at a time for the first two. then you recover your HP and MP fully then 3 more and another break, then 4 then a final recovery to the last form which is the strongest.
10 forms is overdoing it, but the break idea is good. Plus it would make more sense. I mean realistically speaking, would you just stand there and let your opponent who you almost beat turn into this impossible thing? No, and the bad guy would know that. He'd quickly withdraw from battle and transform while you're catching up to him.

One thing that I have noticed as games have moved over into full 3D is the lack of warp magic that could be found in the SNES days. It is annoying to spend 10 min running across a town or field. Since RPG maker 3 looks (from the screenshots) like we will have the ability to make very expansive maps, I would suggest that a warping magic system be considered. Half the fun of magic is being all powerful. How powerful would you feel if you could slay a dragon with one blast from your almighty hands, but it took you 25 minutes to run across town. Some possibilities for the warping system could be (warp to towns/locations previously visitied; warp within towns - exit to exit, to the inn, to the temple, etc.). In this way, a gamer can avoid battles if wanted and spend more time enjoying the story rather than spending hours traversing the landscape. It just opens up options for other players trying out your game; and options are good.

RPG Maker 2 had warp magic. RPGM3 might have it, don't know yet. I think the reason it's used less now isn't because of 3D but because RPGs have become more linear than they used to be.

all right, my main problem is bad text, you dont know bad, long, horendous text and dialouge until you play the fullmetal alchemist games, They seriously take a 5 minute discussion on how to find a round object to insert into the empty space so they can open a door, when I play re4, I just look at the damn door and figure that I need to find a piece, they dont need to do a damn debate over it. Luckily, rpg maker users are sophisticated enough that our released games generally dont have that problem.

While I agree that spending so long explaining a puzzle is annoying, I'd like to point out how none of the RE games that I know of give much explanation to their puzzles, partially due to how out of place it would seem to have such conversations in games like those.

When I was making games in RPGMaker1, I got around the random monsters by planting invisible treasure events in the dungeons (use no graphics on the treasure event) and making the contents of the event a monster battle. That way I could control what monsters and how many got fought...

Except event battles you can't run from. All the more frustrating if you can't see them.

Re: What annoys you in most RPGs?

What really ****es me off in most RPG's, are puzzles.

It's not always the difficulty of the puzzle that angers me, it's that puzzles take patience, and while you are running back and forth looking for the answer, RANDOM BATTLES. They are so annoying. It's like the creators of the game thought it would be funny to turn the random battle rate up to triple the rate in a room with a difficult puzzle. It irritates the hell out of me. What you/anyone who makes an rpg should do, is if you are going to make a puzzle, please, for the sake of my sanity, turn the random battles off.

Another problem, backgrounds. For instance, in an rpg, you see a treasure it's only instinct that you open it. In some cases, you see a treasure chest in a town, so you go to open it and it will either say, "oh it's locked" so you think that there is a key to it, and so you figure that you will find it later in your quest, but you dont so you look at gamefaqs.com to see if it is a hidden item, but it isn't, it's just a graphic that says that text to tease your sanity. Or another situation, you see a treasure, and for what seems like hours, you go up to it and continuosly press, "x" only to find out that it is a piece of the background, so if you are going to put treasure boxes down, put something in them. And in shops, don't even bother putting a treasure chest next to the merchant that is behind the counter, i'd rather him pull the shop's merchandise from his ass. Nuf said.

A problem faced in many early Final Fantasies is the inbalance of monsters and your party, especially FF4. I was in the 2nd to final dungeon, and these dinosaurs, god knows why dinosaurs, were casting fire 1 on my whole party, and it was doing 2000 damage to me, then it would do fire 2 and 30 damage to me. I couldn't help to think, wtf!? Also, if your party is doing 13 damage to a monster, and a monster is doing 3500 to your party, there is some obvious balancing to do. A great suggestion of balance is to take all the stats you character has, like HP, MP, Str, Def, all that is add up all the different stats, and times them by five. For example, HP, MP, STR, DEF, SPD, LUCK, MDEF. 7 different stats times 5, equals 35. With 35, make a blank character, and make it so where you can only spend 35 points on his stats. And for, "better" characters, you could give them 40 points to share upon his stats, so that way, if you had a warrior character, he would have 7 str, and 3 m def. It all works out.

There are tons of minor things in rpgs that **** me off, but I can ignore them for the most part. Lord Vakaal, you should do fine, your ideas are good.

                        I hate random battles.

Solution: Populate the game world with visible creatures representing an encounter so that you can avoid them.

I wonder if this is even possible...

people have been doing that since RPG Maker 1. you just have the enemy on-screen tied to an event that activates a battle with that enemy. it's easy.

Good to know. Can these types of encounters be scripted to move around a given area? Say you create fish-men, and you place them near a lake. Can you have them wander around the lake?

Yeah, you can program the, "fish-men" or whatever you wish to have, to roam around a certain path.
