Elements: A new type of submission

We are considering adding a new type of submission to the Pavilion, and we want your input as to whether you would like to see this new feature. We've tossed the idea around in the Advisor forum and it received favorable reactions, but something like this needs the support of the community to become a reality.

Alongside the Full Games and Demos categories, the proposal is to add an "Elements" category where you could submit a file containing a single element, or a set of elements.

The elements would usually be either a resource for the rest of the community to make use of (this could be used as a springboard when starting a new game, rather than a blank file), or a demonstration of how you pulled off something cool so that others could see how you did it and try the same style of solving the same problem that you were having (you could even add some help text in the editor to explain what everything is doing).

Anyone could submit an Element file (of course), and as long as what you've created is valuable enough that we could reasonably justify using the storage space to host your file, it will generally be accepted.

Here are just a few of the things that could fall under the Elements submissions:
    • Set of Scripts--this would probably be the most common type of Element submission
    • Custom (Battle, Experience, Weather, Shop, etc.) System
    • Tutorials which use in-editor description fields or the games themselves to explain what's going on
    • Set of well-made Maps
    • Minigames and puzzles, where they could reasonably be used by others
    • Libraries of well-made classes and skills

So, we're leaving this up to you guys to decide whether or not you'd like us to implement this new type of Submission. I've included a poll to get a snapshot view of the sentiment toward the idea, but the more important thing is to reach a consensus about the value of having Single Element submissions, so please discuss as well as vote. Could you see yourself submitting this kind of Element file at some point? Would you be interested in using the resources that other people make available through this system?

I think the idea sounds good. A map pack would fit nice into that catagory. I think the events would be really nice too. I know somethings like class changing systems, puzzels, etc... would be cool to have.

Yep, I do think those would be a good use for the Single Element Submissions as well. Most of it falls under the "sets of scripts" category (in general, it would be a set designed to accomplish something specific, like a class changing system or an advanced Status Effect system, or one of a thousand other possibilities). Though I think it's worth adding "puzzles" to the list of examples as well. Thanks!

I like it. I can make some pretty decent maps, so I could see myself submitting some when I bother to get a max drive.

I like the idea, particularly the idea of including small, precoded functions like a party switcher, and NPC-hosted tutorials. I kinda like the idea of including maps also, though I don't know if it's totally necessary, since there are already so many pre-made maps. Still, I guess a wider variety of them to choose from could be nice, for those people who hate to make maps.

Re: Elements: A new type of submission

I'd like to contribute something to the cause at some point, but a lot of what I can contribute would be geared towards specific ideas I have for my games.

Conceivably, I COULD try to do a tutorial walkthrough on creating a pseudo random number generator (which is not really all that hard, but just involves a LOT of variables, and val cond branches).

I could also make a simple minigame tutorial using the patented 3x3 text adventure template that I've used twice in ASA, and once in an unreleased minigame, and which Obright incorporated in Tree of Life. For the 20 modes that are available, I've found that having a virtual 3x3 area to travel in is ideal, and you can make something within that grid as simple or as complicated as you wanted. I made a Resident Evil-style puzzle in one I did (get key, use key to open drawer in other room, get handle out of drawer, use handle to turn on mechanism in other room, etc), a thief minigame (Each "square" had an outdoor and an indoor area, and each house needed a certain level of lockpick to enter, and a certain level of thieving ability not to get caught. There were 3 grades of lockpicks to buy, and three levels of thieving ability to learn. You bought these or paid someone to teach you by stealing from the easier houses, giving the stolen goods to the person that asked for them, who would pay you, and then saving up to get the next level of lockpick or ability, until you stole the final, hardest item in the minigame to "solve" it.....and this was done entirely through text and in a single 19 mode event), and an unreleased strategy puzzle (you have troops with a certain amount of hit points (or number of men in the unit, really) and strength, and you need to move around the 3x3 grid, defeating enemy troops. But it's a bit trial and error, as if you do not do it in the correct order, your troops will run out of either HP (men in the unit) or strength (which is reduced by a certain amount depending on how many men you lose each "battle"), and you will need to start over and try a different approach....I think I incorporated about 5 or 6 different enemy troop types as well).

So as you can see, the possibilities of the 3x3 grid text minigame setup are fairly limitless. A lot of the mechanics for all of the above mentioned minigames are similar, but depending on how you envision WHAT the game is, and how you describe it, it can be almost anything.

So as of now, if I was to submit anything to this endeavour, these would probably be the two things I would want to submit. Yeah, both are a bit niché, but both can be used in a myriad of ways.

I say yes. RPG Maker 2 would benefit the most out of this.

                  yes.

before we make major changes to the site to support it, we need to know that we'd get content to put on the site.

I spent a while yesterday setting up RPG Maker XP and VX pages at the pavilion main site, but I'm not putting them up for public view until we actually have stuff to put on the pages, rather than have an empty directory.

I think it would be a great idea. I learn best by example. I might being to submit some stuff to the site if I felt in was worthy.

There is already stuff floating around the site that could be put into this, like raithwall's New Game + or that map-pack.

Re: Elements: A new type of submission

If there was a **** yes option I would have picked that.

I have all kinds of scripts that I make for fun that do random things that I would love to share.

Also I am currently developing my TBS which I really want to get done so people have it for their own use.

Currently I am in the early stages (meaning the thought process) of designing a stealth action system for RPGM2 along the lines of Splinter Cell. After working with Nash's ACBS I realized that his system could be used for other things besides straight combat. Although this is more of secondary dream then anything else.

I just hope people get on this band wagon because I don't believe in hording ideas.

TBS is coming shortly... I finally got off my lazy self and contacted Datel, so new Max Drive software is coming thus allowing me to release my TBS.

Wow, 19 to 0! Well, I voted so I didn't have to click on the "Click here to see votes each time," so still, 18 to 0. That's like the Titanic vs. the Iceberg. That's like David vs. Goliath, if Goliath had a rocket launcher and a few nukes. That's like the Patriots vs. the Lions. That's literally, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

So thanks everyone for the votes and feedback. Please feel free to keep posting any other ideas here--in the meanwhile, we'll take it back to the Advisor Forum and talk a little more about what exactly falls under the purview of the Single Element submissions, and any other important logistics.

I'm just a couple days away from a very big move right now, so it might be a while before I get any significant conversation going back in that forum. If that delay comes to pass, sorry in advance
