    Arena of Unknowns

So this is officially a thing now!

Speargraf, benevolent god and universe creator, has grown slightly bored. She wants to do something both exciting and kind. A way to give people something fresh and hopeful. Then it hits her, after playing a few RPG Maker games. Why not give those underrated and unknown characters a chance to shine?

So with a snap of her fingers, the Dark Horse Arena appears near the town of Littletown, and spectators flock to see the big event. "Unknowns Clash!", the fliers scream, "Fighters compete for the chance to be a big star in their own game!".

Using her powers to open portals to different dimensions, invites are sent to all games across the RPG Maker spectrum. The castouts, supporting characters and benchwarmers start making the journey to Dark Horse Arena. Some come for the big money. Some come for curiousity, vacation, or entertainment. Most come for the big prize: a game of their own! To rise to the position of MAIN CHARACTER!

    -

This game will contain a lot of characters from other RPG Maker games, not just the ones I've made. Over the last week I've been playing and sending out requests for characters, and the character roster currently sits at 28 characters from 20 different games.

Gameplay goes like this: You're told who your fighting next, and you can go fight them at any time. But wait! Before you do, you have the option of exploring around the arena, and you'll probably find some people will give you sidequests. Complete them, and you'll be better suited to the fight ahead, either by getting better equipment, learning about their HP, attacks or weaknesses, or obtaining stuff that will help you turn the tide in your favor!

That's all the information I have for now! Stay tuned here for new updates!

Very cool! You've gotta do a character teaser at some point! XD

So is the fighting gonna be standard RM1 combat, or do you have something custom in mind?

As I get more done on the game, I'll start revealing characters. Maybe slowly.
      Suuuuuuuuuuppppeeennnsssseeeeee.

The game's going to use the standard RPGM1 combat. It's elegant and simple.

        Time for an update!

Over the last month I've been playing, contacting, and collecting requests for characters. It's fun looking at the roster because of the huge variety of characters and the games they've come from. Some are mains from an unknown demo, some are side characters from popular games. It's going to be very fun creating scenarios for them.

Unfortunately I've hit a few roadblocks lately. I'm unsure of who to have as the main character. While the focus is certainly on the characters, it'd be easier of me if the player just controlled one character. Deciding who is killing me though. Go with an established character, or a brand new lead? I'm leaning towards the latter, but doesn't that kinda ruin the idea for this game? I dunno. I'm getting the beginning started, but I still need to figure these things out before I can get much work done.

So I was under the impression that all 20-28 "unknown characters" are going to be playable, but now I'm not so sure? I certainly think that would be the way to make the game really appealing, as opposed to having them only be opponents.

Assuming you go this route, you could make Speargraf herself the playable character for times where you don't have any Playable Unknown chosen, or maybe some cute, inept lackey that works at the Arena.

The maximum amount of playable characters for rpgm1 is 15, so not all of them would be controllable. You do have a good point of making it more appealing with more playable characters, so I'll try and figure out the best way to do that.

In all honesty, I was trying to avoid too much complexity, since I don't wanna do another three year development like JA. But I'll figure something out.

So, not much posted on this in awhile. Here's why. I've been thinking the whole arena thing isn't working for me. I would just cancel, but I don't want to waste the work I did to get permissions from everybody.

I'm thinking I'd like to use the same theme of putting a lot of characters in a game, and putting it in a different genre. Comedy is a strong point of mine, so maybe I'll look into doing that.

There's some restructuring going on. We'll be back.

Man, the moment I post an important update to my game, it gets immediately buried by this one, with a not-so important update.

                *Claps slowly*

BTW, you're not the only one who loses interest from time to time

Heh, sorry for burying your important update. Yeah I'm trying to stay interested in the idea, I just think it's a good gesture to let anyone interested in my project know what's going on.

Well, time to announce it. This game is cancelled.

A novel idea, sure. Do I see myself working on this for the next few years trying to complete it? No, not really. Sorry I couldn't follow up on my idea, and sorry for anyone hyped up to see their character in this game.

It's not all bad news though. Rather than leave the community like I always plan to after projects, I'll be working on a new project on this site, wherein I play old school RPGM1 games. Should be fun, and completable.

Here's the roster I had confirmed for the game, in no particular order. Thank you to everyone for their support. Every single person I talked to was supportive and granted me any permissions I asked for.

Very sad to see this cancelled. I want you to promise me that you'll consider coming back to the idea if you ever get into the PC Maker series! I think it would have awesome potential there, and would be less of a drag to try to make the whole thing.

Good luck with the RM1 plays, I'll probably watch some of them. Maybe you could do video reviews of the games you play like Kire did, and we could post them to the game listings?

I promise. Although I'm on a Mac, so that may be some time before they either make a compatible version or I get a Windows operating system.

Perhaps. I was actually planning on doing write ups instead of videos. My ultimate goal would be to play every RPGM1 game made, so written reviews would be far easier on me. Maybe I'll do videos for special games or some such. We shall see.

Ah! Yes, write-ups would be great, too. Probably even better for adding to site content. Looking back over your post, I'm not quite sure why I assumed you were doing videos of your plays.
