UPDATE: I just started Xenosaga III today. I just saved and quit for the day at the 1st business district in Fifth Jerusalem. So far I like the story. I'm really interested in how they are going to wrap up all of the lose ends in one game.

I really hated xenosaga 2, everything about it.

3 is easily the strongest of the series, but it still suffers from the same problems the first two had, everything feels so linear, you don't even get a town you can go back to after you've gone through it once. The battle system is pretty good, but there is no feeling of exploration at all, in neither towns nor the dungeons.

Really, the best part of the game are the homages to Xenogears, they went out of their way to make it seem like the two are connected.

They are. But only because they have the same Creator. He couldn't expand on Xenogears because square owns it. So he took many ideas and made a new story. But Saga and Gears are not part of the same story.

It refers to a source of the main villian's power, rather than the prophet.

At least it matches up with stuff presented in the game, rather than the seemingly random attempt at sounding cool like the subtitles of the last two games.

And for it being a seperate series, I really don't believe that. They did remake it and omit/change things, since they couldn't get the rights, obviously, as well as probably just wanting to fix some things they decided they didn't like. But the overall story arc still matches up with it, short of the Eldridge not existing. (...which could still be accounted for, weren't these 3 games originally intended to only be part 1 of the saga?)
