    Haunted Games

Have you ever picked up a game for the first time without getting any information on it off FAQs and such, did some stuff, beat the game and read someplace that that one thing you did was supposed to be impossible, you try again and you cannot do it anymore? This has happened to me countless times.

For example, I recall playing Super Mario RPG back in '96. When Mallow and Mario asked a Toad about Crock and why he didn't stop him, he said "Because I forgot my bazooka. Jeez, gimme a break here." When I went for another playthrough, he said "Because I forgot my bazooka. Sheesh, gimme a break here."

The above might not be %100 accurate, but I swear that this happened to me:

When I played Pokemon for the first time, by the time I got to Fuschia City, I decided to experiment evolution stones on Pokemon to see what worked, as I lacked internet access at the time. I evolved a Goldeen into a Seaking using a Water Stone. In addition, near the Power Plant, I caught a Tangela by fishing. None of those things were supposed to happen, but they did. When I tried again after finding out, it didn't work. It was very freaky.

I'll probably mention a few more once I remember them. Hard for me to keep track.

Has anything of this sort ever happened to any of you?

Something like that. When I first played Mario RPG and was fighting Bowyer, I used Mallow's power to see his HP, and I accidentally triggered the timing press that makes Bowyer say something extra. It was a few years of several playthroughs before I figured out what happened.

BTW, the Pokemon glitch might be related to the MissingNo glitch. I know the MissingNo glitch's result depended on your trainer number. Ah, that game had a few glitches one could exploit. Like the Pokemon clone glitch.

Actually, I never knew Missingno existed when that happened. A year prior to my discovering him, to be precise.

When I would play altered beast on the master system, I could almost always get to the last boss. Beating Neff was tough, but I eventually pulled it off.

The first time I fought him, though, I managed to do some attack that pushed his sprite off the screen a little too far. Then, he never came back, and I was stuck on the boss screen with nothing to do and no way to beat him. I had to play the whole game over again. -_-

I've played it dozens of times since then, and while I use the same strategy on the boss, this has never happened again.

Also, in Animal Crossing for the GC, there was a duck I hated named Scoot. I'd send him hate mail and booby-trap his yard. I even made signs that said "scoot f*cking sucks" and my character wore a shirt that had his face crossed out on it.

One time, when it was dark and the animals were supposed to be asleep, he comes out of nowhere and initiates a conversation... I had never seen a character do this, but I'm sure it can happen. He confesses his love for me and starts getting all gushy and sappy. Then he runs off later and I'm left very confused by it all. Never happened again.

I SWEAR: the first time I played Symphony of the Night, Alucard and Orlox had a dialogue before their fight.
I can't, for the life of me, remember what they said.
Oh my god! You are so beautiful.
I had no idea how beautiful you were.

YES!! I watched my friend play Symphony like a few months ago, and he went to fight Orlox and nothing happened before the fight, so I was like, "Why did you skip the dialogue?" and he was like "I didn't do nothin'!" and I thought I was crazy.

There must be a way to intiate it!

Ehh, one time I was at the end of Metroid Prime, and fighting the Queen.
There's a part where she's kind of rolled up in a ball, and you can't do anything to her until she comes out of it... Well, she never came out. She kind of just rolled a little bit back and forth while I poked at her with my beam. It was kind of funny.

I don't know if this is still on subject, but many years ago there was a restaurant I always ate at as a kid, that had a Mortal Kombat II arcade game. I played it alot. On the front, underneath the logo, it said something like "New version of MK2! Defeat the hidden characters and play as them with a kode".

Nobody to this day believes me. In addition, I hacked MK2 with a hex editor, and found entries in the programming code for characters such as Ermac and Tanya, but no one believes me on that either despite the fact I posted screenshots.

In ff tactics, I recruited the dark knight Gafgarion during the fight where you're supposed to kill him, and had him in my party for the rest of the game.

I think it was the bomb omb stage in Mario 64 but, I did something trigger a glitch and this one coin would NEVER disapear, but it'd always give me a coin. I got to like 500 and got bored. It was neat and I still don't know how I did it.

JLa, ERMAC was short for "error machine". I seem to remember reading about
those glitch characters back in the day in VG&CE or something. I'm sure of it.

I don't remember ever talking to Olrox in SOTN, he just got up from the chair
and started kicking ass.. I must have completed that game like ten times too.
Actually, Ermac was short for "Error Macro", and the game you are referring to is MK1.

That was simply a bug. From what I know, Error Macro is a sub-routine in the code used to correct errors in the game in real time, but if it happened while fighting Scorpion, Scorpion would turn red and his name would be replaced with Ermac. (So basically, the Ermac glitch was a system self repair type thing). The reason he turned red, was because that was the color of all the characters in the game until the developers colored them, but for some reason that glitch causes the game not to be instructed to apply the color pallette. Believe it or not, Smash TV was made on the same arcade board and it had it's own "Ermac" but I think it just froze the game.

I am referring to MK2. The creators never intended for an "Ermac" in MK1, but due to his popularity and the major coverage of the glitch in EGM, they made him a full fledged hidden character in MK2 (This time, on purpose) but no one has found him yet. Acclaim and Midway both confirm he's real.

Furthermore, in the code, what little you can actually read without a decompiler, there is a section in there obviously for what happens when a certain character wins, and there are sections in there for Ermac and Tanya.

If I had a way of hosting images, I'd post it up.

                            Re: Haunted Games

This isn't a glitch so much as completely terrible luck, but back when I had both a Game Genie and Super Mario Bros. 3 for NES, I once used the infinate time code. I got all the way to Bowser's Castle, and at the end of the room right before his lair, there is a statue in the ceiling with a small one-space gap above it. I was big, and duck-jumped into the gap. When I stood up, I slid to the right edge of the screen, getting stuck inside the wall. In any normal case, I could've just waited for the timer to run out so I'd lose my life and get sent back to the start of the stage, but with that infinate time code in there, I wound up making it impossible for me to finish the game without starting completely over!

Now for a real glitch, in Super Mario World on the SNES. It was in Donut Secret 2 (the ice stage overlooking Valley of Bowser). The first coin block that created the coin trail. I can't remember how (I did it a few times), but if I hit the block just right, I could get a key to pop out instead. The key served no purpose (trust me, I looked everywhere for a secret keyhole), but it was interesting nonetheless.

Excitebike 64, in the map editor. I somehow created a slope so steep using the custom pieces, that the only way to get over it was to wheelie over it. Seriously, in one little space, the land went from level with the ground to the highest possible spot any slope can be; must've been at least at an 80 degree angle. It was fun using that slope to beat the pants out of my opponents. Occasionally they were able to make it up, but usually they would up running their wheels at the bottom of the slope, constantly flipping over. Unfortunately, the track that had that slope was lost due to the memory card being currupt, and I have no idea how I created that slope.

I believe you, JLa. I remember you posting about that on the old Pavilion. I told my friends about when I saw it. Mortal Kombat is known for having secret stuff hidden in it anyway.
