    Re: Catching up w/ Suikoden

Don't really see the "choose your own adventure" part yet, but I'm liking it.

I'm about 5 hours into it so far, and what you've heard is true...it takes a while to get started. I haven't encountered a "real" challenging dungeon yet, but the plot is really sucking me in, I like the voice acting, and a lot of the animation is quite good...even if it's because it's mocap. You can so tell when it's not mocap cuz the animation gets awkward and bad.

Anyway, so far I'm hooked. I've been itching for an RPG w/ an intriguing political plot. Nothing is quite black and white so far, which I guess is what Suikoden is known for.

Oh, and THANK GOD, the battle engine is fast and responsive. Battles won't take you a year and a day like they did in 3, because they strike a nice balance between making the attacks quick and looking good as well.

That's all for now. I'll let you know how it continues.

Right, and just because YOU liked it doesn't mean it didn't have offensive, ****-poor game design. (As well as Animation that was extremely hard on the eyes because it was half-done and just reversed.)

Kire, what time period does it take place in? I know it takes place before 2, and George Prime is in it, but how far before two? Is he still a general? And what land does it take place in? Harmonia?

I really wanted to like 3. But the running animation.

And then... ducks in hats for no reason whatsoever.

V sounds awesome though. I think I'm going to trade Grandia III for it. I mean Grandia's battle system is fun and all but the plot... The characters... the script....

          Jesus.

                  Re: Catching up w/ Suikoden

I've dropped about 20 hours into Suikoden V at this point and I'm convinced that this is the best Suikoden for PS2. While I know that's not saying much, I can also say that this is the first Suikoden since II to actually have progressed in terms of gameplay. The 'active' duels, 'real time strategy' army battles, and party formations actually feel like improvements as oppossed to the nonsense in III and IV. These additions aren't changes for the sake of change.

The technical flaws are there. The visuals are underwhelming and there are a lot of loading times... but I hope people can overlook them. I'd love to see what Konami could do with a Suikoden title if they gave it a real budget.

                    EGM gave it 6.5s.

I haven't had a chance to read the EGM yet, but I certainly can understand why people can be put off by Suikoden V. You have to be really patient with this game or it will be lost on you. However, if I'm not mistaken, every entry in the series has recieved reviews that could be best described as modest. Even Suikoden II, which time has revealed to be somewhat of a classic...

If I remember correctly, Suikoden II got 8s or so, which it deserved. It’s a charming as **** game, but it’s not a classic for its gameplay or graphics.

I'm near the end of V and about 73 hours in... and have enjoyed every moment of it so far... It does remind me a lot of #2, but with a little of #3 thrown in.

Suikoden 2 was just so damn good, I don't think they're gunna top it.

Friends become enemies, enemies become friends, a few murders, a bunch of war, and one of the better rpg villains.
