WoW is nice and casual-friendly, a nice change of pace for MMOs.
FFXI, while expansive and awe-inspiring, is an exercise in immersion. Be prepared to spend half a day (eventually) trying to get to the next level. And don't even think of trying to mix and match your jobs to "be different": you'll never find and party and you'll never be able to solo anything unless you get BST/WHM. And not even then.
Guild Wars does not interest me in the least. I don't know all the details, but here's what I've heard: "there's is a very good reason it's free. You can burn through the game content VERY quickly and the level cap is quite low."
The point is just about every MMO has class interdependence and is very difficult if the rules set forth by such a system aren't followed. WoW follows the same rules, as well, but is geared towards casual players and that is why it works. I played SWG for about 2 years and they had so much social stuff and combat sucked so much that I was actually able to enjoy the game for so long without having to do anything related to combat.

People coming off of MMOs like UO or EQ are able to reach endgame in WoW in like a month
I dunno, MMOs suck....cept PSO, which I only call an MMO cause of the pay to play even though it's 3d diablo.
Level cap is low because it really doesn't matter, they say in the advertisments (I find this true also) "The game is not about how long you play but how you play) In one mission they GIVE you the max level cap. You make a PvP character you start out at level 20 (the cap). The graphics are unbelieveable even compared to WoW. The game requires some ability to intertwine skills and spells. One is like this, First you use the skill Rotting Disease and make the opponent sick and lose health, combine that with virulence and you cause them now to have poison, weakness, AND disease for 3 seconds, you then while they are trying to heal, use a skill called Shatter Allusions (or somthing like that) that way they start to heal themselve but OOPS! They end up failing the spell and you gain health! Now all those are just if you are a Necromancer they're also other things like Necro/Elementalist or Warrior/Monk. And no matter what you use it works out and there is a stratagy for every character.
Also ArenaNET are a group of designers from Starcraft, Diablo II, and Warcraft III that broke away from Blizzard.
The biggest problem comes from what I like to call the "EQ party list".
Where when it comes to the point where you must wait for hours on end to get into a party to kill a certain spawn point, in which most likely you have to wait another hour or two, to get a stab at it.
Most people don't like to be force to party or forced to wait for a stupid spawn point in which they must wait in line for.
Everquest was the one who started it. I remember people waiting at the entrances of some spawn points making people add their names to lists to spend some time killing a spawn.
The problem is with random parties you can get 1.8k xp an hour, which is pathetic.
In my static party, before I quit, I was getting 4-5k xp an hour. Mostly because I had a RNG decked out in millions of gear in equipment.
I had BLM on 45, WHM on 37, BRD on 42, RDM on 30. Taru all the way.
Another thing I don't get is why all the Elvaan BLMs thought they could be a mage as well as I could. Each of my spells did +25 more damage than theirs thanks to my equipment and natural intelligence, so there isn't much flexibility.
I wanted to solo, but being a BST sucked.

I just quit FFXI a month ago for good, I couldnt't stand it anymore.
It's great, but it's just too technically demanding. First off, the whole chain system, the lack of good solo'ing, the ridiculous level requirements for mission progression and on top of that, the bad adjustments of the classes(why screw up RNGs huh!?). You spend so much time just trying to level up, actually progressing in the game takes a back seat. There's been 2 expansions out and a 3rd on the way, but I haven't even touched half of the missions. I wouldn't be surprised if people took at least 2 years just to get up to Chains of Promathia.
