That's the thing. I love Metroid, the ones I've played at least (Original, Super, 2 on Gameboy, Fusion) and the recent 2D Castlevania are the same type of game so I expect to like them. I think I just haven't gotten far enough in to really get into it. And Metroid is automatically better than Castlevania: Hot chick > Dude that looks like a chick
I don't think Metroid and the new Castlevanias are really that alike. They both have similar maps and require finding new abilities to progress through them, but the real gameplay is worlds apart.
Castlevania places a huge emphasis on the monsters, and on combat in general. The level design itself is pretty straightforward, but you're encouraged to keep exploring to fight new monsters and find new equipment and abilities to kill them with. The Aria and Dawn of Sorrow games take this even further with the souls, which encourage you to seek out and kill at least one of every monster.
Metroid is all about the environment. There are environmental puzzles in literally just about every room, and while there is a minor amount of combat, most of the challenge in the series comes from exploring every nook and cranny for that one hidden path that will get you where you need to go. This focus on exploration over combat is increased since you improve your stats by finding items and not by killing monsters.
So while both series have core similarities, the play experience is completely different.
I realize not very many people have played Demon's Crest. If you haven't you should check it out (SNES), its a novel and very intriguing game. There are like 4 or 5 different demon forms that you can transform into.
I keep hearing good things abuot HoD and then bad things. I guess its the kinda game that you either love or hate. I'm going to bet that I will like it so I'm getting it. Even if it is too easy, I kind of like the simplicity. There's no point in having so many spells or abilities that you'll never be able to use them all like in AoS.
Harmony of Dissonance is flat-out broken. The attacks are ridiculously unbalanced, the abilities you get are the lamest the series has seen, there's no variety in the monsters or the levels, there's nothing interesting to find or explore, and the controls are loose and floaty. Even the music is crap.

I think you sold Demons Crest short.
Demons Crest is an AMAZING game. That has multiple paths through stages optional bosses and some neat ass character design.
Super Metroid is boring compared to Castlevania though.
Are you joking basically there's a lot of good stuff about Super Metroid namely the bosses are fun to beat except for a few which take quite while to take down.
And it's also has one of the most dramatic final boss battles. Basically i could spill the beans but that's a MAJOR SPOLER. if you have'nt played it.
