    Sony's Online Plans

Sony has announced that PlayStation 3's online function won't feature a central service similar to Xbox Live. Instead it will have an 'open architecture' that allows games publishers to decide how they want gamers to get online with their games.

With Xbox Live, publishers have to work with Microsoft, which is something that prevented EA's Xbox games going online until 2004. It seems a similar service to Xbox Live does not appeal to Sony as its approach focuses on giving flexibility and freedom to individual publishers.

Looks like they're doing it pretty much the same way as the PS2.

I would rather have a more "Live!" like online architecture dealie, but I don't mind how they're doing it either. I guess it's easier for developers, but it's more awkward for the consumer.

It's true. Sony's PS2 online service was completely overshadowed by Live!. MS' service made online console gaming a hell of a lot easier.

They may have a little dealie in their pants to make it more convenient for the consumer this time around, though. PS3 IS likely an expensive device, so it would be a good idea to make it easy for online play.

Live is a heck of a lot better than PS2's online service.

No friends options on most if not all the ps2 games. Most of them have no real way of getting together with people with ease.

I never said live wasnt better then ps2, but then again you DO have to pay for it. I prefer free considering i dont have a credit card.

I've always been a fan of free, but I'm not dead set against paying for the service if I feel I'm going to be getting my money's worth out of it. To date, the only reason I've had to play online is with Star Wars: Battlefront. I don't know if it's my taste in games, or just Sony's half-ass support of its peripherals in general, but if I had to pay to get the same sort of service I'm getting now, I'd just skip online games altogether.

I think X-Box Live is worth it...and I really don't play that many X-Box games. Sony is being ****y, methinks...

I hate setting up an online connection, and registering for every damn PS2 online game I play, Sony sure is playing it "smart" again.
