So what's the deal with these downloadables? Is Case Zero a prequel and Case West a, uh, sequel or a spin off or a side story? I might get 'em once I'm done with the game proper.

Case Zero is a prequel, and Case West is a sequel, yes. They're mini-games in their own right.

Can't speak for Case West, but Case Zero was quite fun. Probably my favorite Live game of the year, especially considering its low price.
