I don't think anyone exactly was claiming that it was something *new*. Besides, a mechanic is only what you make of it with its implementation and level design.

    tl:dr Simpsons did it.

Re: Dr. VVVVVV or: How I Learned To Stop Crying And Love Indie Games

I've played a few levels of this now, and so far, Toaster is right: it's absolutely fantastic. It does what any well-designed game should: it takes a simple set of game mechanics (or, in this case, one mechanic, with the gravity switching) and then explores that concept as thoroughly as it possibly can. Almost every single room in the game has something new and interesting going on, and the sheer creativity that goes into some of them is beautiful.

This also might be the only game I've ever played where I appreciate ultra-frequent checkpoints and zero penalty for dying. Whereas most games like Bioshock or the new Prince of Persia use these things to create consequence-free environments where the actions of the player don't matter, VVVVVV uses them as a means to push the level design to its absolute limit, no matter how crazy the idea. And it works incredibly well. I've been dying at a rate of probably once every 10 or 20 seconds, and yet the game has never felt frustrating or unfair. It's a perfect marriage of brutal, old-school challenge and a more modern sense of accessibility.

And the music. Oh my god, the music. It's the catchiest chiptune music I've heard in a long, long time.

I can't wait to play more.

I concur with BZ and Toaster.

I wonder if that music is available to download anywhere.

This is going to come across as facetious (and I don't care) but I’m really disappointed more of you aren’t jumping on this ****ing amazing bargain of a game considering how positive the few people who has played the full game feel about it.

Seriously, I feel bad for anyone who misses out on this game. It's great.

I'll do it, I WILL. But I've already turned my TV into a fun machine, and I can't do it to my computer too just yet.
