Re: Flower, Sun, and Rain critique

Obviously we are arguing personal preference!

Though I'll say, I think movies lend themselves better to artistic expression than the vidya.

Actually, that's quite an interesting point, Kire! Watching a movie is different from playing a game, because it can be said that you're "doing something" while you're playing a game. That's what makes the time investment so valuable.

Every medium of entertainment has had auteurs who want to use their work as a way of getting a point across aside from "hey man let's all just have a good time". If someone means to **** you off, and you get ****** off, then their work was obviously a success. I think that's a fantastic thing.

I totally respect what Suda's going for. But it's, like... I wish I could compare Flower, Sun and Rain to an instance of design that was actually engaging in its own right rather than just as a thematic means to an end. The closest he's gotten was No More Heroes, and man, that's got its own problems.

That makes Funny Games the most successful movie ever.

If anyone intends to play the game, I recommend holding off on reading the essay. It's already spoiled a few things for me.

          I'm 30% in right now.
I'd swear it's a satire on Hotel Dusk or Professor Layton if those games weren't made after this one.

So far the tedium is glaring. There's a character you speak to who actually says something like: "I like flags. I wonder who saw the first flag and thought up that name. Oh, by the way, I'm setting up a flag for you." And literally after that point, you can proceed to the next point in the game. It's cool and infuriating!
Oh my god! You are so beautiful.
I had no idea how beautiful you were.

The DS version is a remake so who knows what changes were made to reflect current trends.

Welp, I'm done and it is as taxing as you've read.

                  *** SPOILERS ***
You have to feel bad for Edo. A villain or a boss can kill your character as many times as our patience can take. However, we only have to beat them once. Immortality and time control is an unfair advantage.
                  *** END SPOILERS ***

All that's left to do is rubber banding down the D-pad for those pedometer rewards.

Finally picked this up and began playing the other night. I've not gotten all that far yet, but already, I've picked up on some surrealist vibe. Well, maybe not surrealist, per se, but it definitely seems a bit OFF, and to me, that's a good thing.

This is to David Cronenberg as Disgaea 3 is to David Lynch. Meaning, Flower, Sun and Rain seems strange and odd, but seems to have an underlying meaning or theme. Disgaea 3 seems to have been made to be as quirky and obtuse as possible, purely for the sake of being able to do so.

Be sure to check out the analytical essay after you've finished the game.

The essay is what caused me to purchase the game in the first place.

I mean, I'd been SORTA interested beforehand, but reading that made me want to play it. Most of the details in what I read are long forgotten by now, though, so it's not like OMG SPOILERS!

I do seem to remember something about a time loop or something, though, if memory serves.

The last thing I remember about this game is that I was stuck/lost/confused. In a parking lot. Like five minutes into the game. I am not good at this.
