Mega Drive for $40! Worth it?

This used CD/DVD/game place near me is selling a Mega Drive (Japanese Sega Genesis) for $40. Is this a reasonable price? Moreso, is it a reasonable price considering I'd need to invest who knows how much on games to play on it? I THINK it might not have A/V cables, nor a power supply. Now, I'm fairly certain that a Genesis A/V cable SHOULD work, but obviously, even if I got a replacement power cord, I'm guessing I'd need a voltage converter. And I'm fairly certain that it's NTSC, so it should play fine on North American TVs. But after dumping money into cables/voltage converter/games/etc, is this even something I should be thinking about?

Is there even anything worthwhile playing on the system that is not outrageously priced that I don't need to be fluent in Japanese to be able to play?

What is one of these even going for?

...If you can't even think of a Mega Drive game you want to play, that's all the answer you need.

I've not done enough research to know if there IS a Mega Drive game I wanna play, and I've got a limited time to make a decision.

Good answer, btw, Mora. And I don't mean that as sarcasm. That was probably the best answer I could have received for this topic.

It could be a PAL system as well. they were called Mega Drives over there. if it's japanese, it'll be NTSC, so no worries.

but be warned, the genesis actually has regional lockout. beyond just changing the cartridge shape.

Yeah...that much I know. I just bought the Sonic Ultimate Genesis thing for PS3, so I'm not really interested in American Genesis games. Seriously, Valk....you'd probably know better than anyone...is $40 a good price, and ARE there Japanese games worth playing that will not cost an arm and a leg?

I don't like the genesis. sorry. the only game that comes to mind that we didnt get in the US is Megaman: The Wily Wars, and that's not cheap at all.

Sega was smart back then and brought over all the games that people may actually want to play over to the states. It wasn't until the Saturn came out that they became retarded.

              Just... don't buy it.

Unless you have the old cartridges and your favorite stuff isn't already available on Virtual Console or a compilation disc or whatever, there is no reason to own a Genesis/Mega Drive in this day and age.

for 40$ i got a saturn, the ram expansion, a memory card, 12 games, and the 3d controller.

                  you're overpaying!

edit: and this isn't a "heh i'm so thrifty" post. the average price on ebay for the saturn is like 40$. you can do better for the mega drive.
