Yeah, I hate to say it, but it's really, really hard for me to go back and play the original Metroid these days. Everything looks the same, there's no indication of where to go or where you've been, and the controls are clunky as hell.
But the GBA games, average? Man, I LOVE those! Fusion got a little irritating with the lame dialogue all over the place, but it used its linearity to create some really fantastic setpieces, like the timed area where the furnace blows up or the areas that change over the course of the game. And Zero Mission is just super tight and super streamlined, and you can sequence-break to the point of beating the game without any of the suit upgrades except for a single missile pack! What's not to like?
Since you guys are talking about other Metroid games, I'll chime in with thoughts on each one (that I've played).
Metroid (NES):
It was a great game, but hopefully whomever beta tested it got fired. The game was a ton of fun and I still play it to this day, but the number of bugs in it, OMG. Classic passwords like these stick fondly in my mind:

Metroid II (GB)
HORRIBLE. In every since of the word I have always completely detested this game. I understand that most people liked it, but I hated everything about it. I don't know why. I just did.
Metroid III (SNES)
Everything about this game was perfect, yet the end boss was WAY too easy. That was my only complaint. I don't even know how to explain why I liked it. I loved everything about this game.
Metroid Fusion (GBA)
What a complete and utter dissapointment. You're given a tiny world to explore, with a built in walkthrough you can't turn off! You're told where to go and what to do at all times!!! Sometimes you can go on a different path than what the built in walkthrough suggests, but most of the time, you don't. This was the second most linear game in the series. SA-X is the only thing that made it decent.
Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
I thought this was the second best game in the series, it was a great apology for Fusion. You are given hints about where to go, but it's not as much as in Fusion and it doesn't detract from finding things on your own as it did in Fusion. Some of the best sequence breaking tricks were in this game.
Metroid Prime (GC)
Love/hate relationship. What Retro Studios did with transforming Metroid into a first person action game was nothing short of astonishing. The fact they pulled that off is one of the most surprising things in gaming history. On the other hand, some of the Metroid feel was lost with the lack of the screw attack and stackable beams. In fact, the beam system almost killed this game for me.
Metroid Prime II (GC)
Someday I WILL beat this game. I SWEAR. Seriously. Why are you looking at me like that?
