Yeah, despite loving the series to death, I feel the same way. The last... um... half-dozen games in the series have all been about quantity over quality, basically: MORE rooms, MORE monsters, MORE items, MORE spells... but at the cost of making any of those things substantial.

Ecclesia is dropping off a little; the last couple levels have been typical monster-closet IGA fare, and even the last couple of bosses have been duds. I'm hoping it picks up again soon; we'll see.

I had no idea about this game at all.

      Keep it up!

someone pm me when konami decides that good level design and challenging enemies are more important than collecting items, leveling up, grinding for rare drops, and backtrack BACKTRACK BACKTRACK

symphony of the night was good, jeeze, but rondo of blood and ultimate ghosts n goblins on the psp were the last GOOD non-metroid style sidescrollers i've played since Rayman ffffffffff

Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins was broken and unplayable. I hated that game and it made me want to rip my eyes out. Not being able to control the direction of your character mid-jump only further exacerbated the cheapness of the game given it's random-ass level design.

With that said, I agree with everything else you said. Castlevania's aren't about collecting useless crap, getting rare drops, and filling the Bestiary. They aren't about running down empty hallways and copy/paste rectangular rooms with monster closets, either.

Jump off a building and tell me if you can magically change the direction of your jump mid-flight.

On a serious note, Ghosts n Goblins (like Dragon Quest) is one of those hardcore games that refuses to conform to every other gaming features which targets it to a niche market. I guess level based sidescrollers in general have suddenly become a niche market (although the success of New Super Mario Bros tells me different) but Castlemetroid flies off the shelves and the only difference is a renamed set of the same abilities and a handful of monsters.

I heard this Order of Ecclesia game is hard but not in a 'pixel-dodging, smart design' hard. One guy on 4chan was complaining about how he got killed by 2 shots from a skeleton's bone.

The success of New Super Mario Bros. means, "Yes, Mario still sells."

I think if I could pick one thing that embodies my problems with the recent Castlevanias, it's Wind the ghost from Portrait of Ruin. Like, really? Who let this guy and his inane **** cross the border from JRPG Land?

                    Perhaps dodging would help?

Wind wasn't as bad as the fat, greedy priest and the SUUUPER LAAAAME whiny badguy. The last boss was decent (except for that stupid spiked wall attack) but nothing could make up for having a vampiric van Gogh as an enemy.

Oh my God, the whole scenario was really stupid, wasn't it? It's like they combined Castlevania with Kirby Canvas Curse.

Mostly I was talking about Wind's quests. I didn't want to master crap weapons, but HE wanted me to, so, damn it, I HAD To.

I liked Dawn of Sorrow and Aria of Sorrow. Those were great, I really enjoyed the soul system in it for the extra grindy-ness. I hated when they went to gothic art style to ANIME GOODYNESS KAWAIIIIII!

People forget that Dracula X was pretty animu.

I'm playing this. It is a good deal more difficult than your average metroidvania.
The map reminds me of FF Tactics.

My main complaint so far is the glyph bar. I don't think I should be arbitrarily limited as to how frequently I can use my main weapon.

Got pwned by the third boss. Might need to level or get better armor!
Oh my god! You are so beautiful.
I had no idea how beautiful you were.

I'm at the endgame fetch quest-athon that all the reviews are complaining about.

Yes, it really is that bad. Villagers are asking for items that are rare enemy drops and giving absolutely no indication of what enemy or even what area to get them from.

It sounds like I'm gonna skip this.

Along with Dead Space and SH5.

At least Chrono Trigger DS is coming out!!
