Is Chrono Trigger still awesome, even after all these years?
Re: Is Chrono Trigger still awesome, even after all these years?
how does that work then? there is a battery in the cart but isnt it recharged when you leave it in the slot? i can understand a battery not lasting 10 years but they should be able to last the length of time it takes to play through the game.
Even if batteries recharge, they can still die and not be able to recharge any more. the dreamcast's internally battery recharges, but mine has finally died.

Yeah, my Dreamcast battery charges, but it is all the way discharged if I leave it off for a few days. My original Dreamcast, fresh out of the box brand new, had the same problem, and my understanding was that it was by design. I don't care much about having the correct date/time on my Dreamcast so that's not a big concern to me.
As for modifying cartridges, just buy a few copies of Super Mario World and practice.
There has to be a way to hack it and improve it though. I'm sure Valk is on a good track. Replacing the battery while the cart is in the system would be really hard though. If I so much as bump my SNES my games freeze.
Oddly enough, my Dragon Quest V and VI SNES carts still hold saves pretty well. My FFIV import doesn't at all, while my FFV and FFVI imports still have good battery life. The USA releases of FFIV and FFVI that I own hold saves, as well as Yoshi's Island, but my Mario All-Stars cart only holds saves in any save slot except the first. Weird.

I'm thinking the battery swap would be pretty easy. you push down tthe cart with one hand, and slide the battery out with the other. just gotta figure out a way to hold the battery in place that would secure it if the cart was moving, and make it easy to pull out.
maybe a modification on the inside of the shell that will hold in all sides of the battery while it's assembled? and then once the cart is open, only a simple metal clamp holds it together?

I'm gonna figure this out.
Please do! I have a ton of games I could hack if you/we figure it out. Keep me posted!!!
Also, if you can figure out how to insert a fan translation of Dragon Quest V and VI onto the actual cartridges, I would be forever grateful.
Re: Is Chrono Trigger still awesome, even after all these years?
that's actually incredibly easy. there's flash cartridges you can buy for the SNES. upload the fan translated rom onto the flash cart. then open the two carts and swap the insides.

Neat. I'll probably buy additional cartridges so I can keep the original Japanese versions and then have a translated version. I wonder how much those things cost?
Edit: With one of those Flash Cartridge thingies, would I still have to worry about the save batteries dying or would that be flash too?
