Jeremy, you cannot hack the PS3's firmware. It's locked down and secure. the only thing that can change the firmware is a file on a PS3 game, or a network download that HAS to come from sony's server. The only reason the PSP's firmware was ever hacked is because sony stupidly let you run a firmware update from the memory stick.
You can do stuff in linux on the PS3, but that's as far as customizing the operating system goes.
Here's why PS3's without PS2 backwards compatability suck:
The PS3 can upscale and smooth out PS2 games, resulting in PS2 titles looking better than ever before.
The PS3 lets you create as many internal memory cards for PS1 and PS2 games as you want/have space for. I have countless RPG Maker 1 and 2 games stored on my PS3's hard drive. it's incredibly convenient.
If the PS3 doesnt have backwards compatability, you are stick having two systems hooked up, two sets of controllers out, and having to deal with memory cards as well. Not to mention the constant swapping of AV cables that would be required of most people.
Also, I think if the PS3 game allows it, you can install mods. I've been screwing around with Unreal Tournament 3 today, and there's a lot of nice maps and game play tweaks people made.
The 3rd person perspective is nice. It's over the shoulder like Gears of War, but Unreal moves at a much faster pace. Also, Jetpacks!
According to an Ars Technica mole the 80 gb is being replaced by a 120 or 160 gb + DualShock 3 SKU. No hints whether it'll have software BC and card readers or not.
120? 160? that is overkill. is there anyone here who has even come close to using all that space? i dont think my computer has even used more then 20 gigs.
Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!
Card Three is released! You can find it here!
I assume they just want to compete with the 360 Elite's hard drive. And it might be useful for Europe and Japan where they're adding tv recording or if they finally get a PSN video marketplace going.
