Ok, let me give you the breakdown as I see it:

You have the three "core" classes:

Soldier - Specializes in all four weapon types; Only class that can wear heavy armor

Tech - Specializes in meddling with technical stuff/party buffs; Also can train in decryption, which is useful for hacking, and hacking can lead to sidequests

Biotic - Specializes in doing damage to enemy with powers as well as buffs/debuffs

Now what does this mean? Specialization in a weapon increases damage and accuracy. Why does this matter? Using the sniper rifle in zoomed mode makes it basically the same as the MGS sniper rifle. That's right; it's shaky cam time! However, as your accuracy increases, the shakiness decreases. Thus, unless you're trained in it, it's nigh unusable.

Accuracy for the other weapons simply gives you a larger reticule. The larger your reticule, the farther off your aim can be for it to still count as a hit. Thus, if you're really skilled you can ignore accuracy, because you'll be going for headshots and the like on your own. If you're not the greatest at action game, like me, then accuracy can be a godsend.

So why does this matter? If you're any class BUT soldier or a soldier hybrid, the only weapon you can specialize in is the pistol. In fact, there's one class that doesn't specialize in any weapons at all!

So let's get to the Hybrid classes:

Vanguard (Biotic/Soldier) - Loses the biotic buffs/debuffs (mostly), but gains the ability to specialize in shotguns as well as pistols. If you pick this class, odds are you'll be frontlining, concentrating mainly on your guns with an assist every now and then from a power.

Infiltrator (Tech/Soldier) - Loses beneficial buffs, but gains the ability to specialize in the sniper rifle. If you enjoy making the enemy's weapon overheat, or the computer by them explode, this is the class for you. Generally you'll try to begin combat with a lucky snipe shot then try to hang back and snipe as much as you can until the enemy gets in close range, at which point you'll whip out your pistol. The problem with the class is that if the enemy you're fighting is completely organic, with no high-tech weapons, your skills are useless.

Sentinel (Tech/Biotic) - Can't specialize in any weapons. I haven't played it, but I'm guessing if you pick this you'll probably be hanging back and letting your allies do most of your fighting for you.

So basically, if you enjoy charging headfirst, go soldier. If you want to play with guns but want some cool powers, go for a soldier hybrid.

One thing I will say so far: I have all but one party member, and although I haven't used the latest one I've got yet, it looks like the NPCs are heavy with the Decryption skill and light on biotic powers, so keep that in mind.

I can now say that I've hit a heavy combat area. I've been in fight after fight for the last 45 minutes of the game, but I'm liking it. I'm just annoyed because I'm supposed to find this item for a subquest and I can't, despite the fact that I'm looking right where my journal tells me to. Frustrating.

I did get a chance to try out the Mako though. It controls VERY flighty. For what is basically a tank, it feels very loose and fast. The controls are also taking some getting used to, what with it controlling like a FPS but slightly skewed since it's third person above. I actually found that it's easier to drive in cannon view than regular view, for me at least.

In defense of my previous statement:

      - I really don't like the Star Wars Universe.

      - Combat felt shallow.

      - Eh.

So, I picked this up today.

I went down to Gamestop this morning to see if they had any copies of Assassin's Creed, and I was told that they had not received it yet. I was wondering if this was just typical Gamestop bull****, so I decided to walk a few blocks down to K-Mart to see if they had it in. No luck on the Assassin's Creed front, but I was surprised to find a solitary copy of Mass Effect in the cabinet. The hillbilly at the counter rung it up while I quietly prayed that she wouldn't pay attention to the orange sticker across the top telling her not to sell it.

Unfortunately, I have an exam tomorrow, so I probably won't even have time to play it tonight. Being a big fan of KOTOR, I'm pretty excited.

Come on. The orange sticker at the top was the best part! Although I will freely admit to having been just as paranoid as you were when I was getting rung up. The funny thing was that the guy walking it to the register was actually reading the case, but all they said was "Looks like a long game."

Sadly, I'm in the same boat. I have an exam first thing tomorrow morning, so I'm stuck leaving Pheros in the hands of the Geth until then.

What you have told us about Mass Effect is incredible. I have been keeping a eye out on this game for quite some time. I'm a new xbox fan so this will be my first bioware game. I've downloaded tons of videos and keep watching them over and over waiting impatiently for the 20 to arrive. Well just 6 days to go.

The graphics are the best I've seen on a rpg on xbox 360. One among the best. I was getting a little bored to halo 3. I've practically played like 700 games on halo 3. I was dying for a new game to release me from this halo adiction. Commander Ryu Shepperd awaits reconstruction! I was too late to preorder a limited edition. Oh well the game is just as good.

Further thoughts as I regroup from a major asskicking on Luna (stupid robots flying around behind me and destroying my team)...

I now understand why the Mako is so flighty. It's because when you're exploring uncharted planets that sucker goes EVERYWHERE. I'm talking straight up a cliff, practically.

One note for those who are stupid like me: if you're exploring a planet with a non-breathable atmosphere (you'll know it if you start in the Mako) you have to put on your helmets in the equipment screen before they'll let you exit.

I'm still loving this game. My partners' AI is starting to get a little annoying though. Their constant need to run right in front of my shots do get a little old, but if you use your squad commands correctly, that shouldn't be a problem.

Money is a weird issue in this game. Swear to god, from what things cost at the store, you barely get any. Part of that may be that I'm a goody-goody, but...

After completing a major story mission, I'm getting the same warm feeling I got with KOTOR. I love this game so much. Easily my game of the year.

I will say that I'm beginning to feel really sorry for those of you who haven't gotten a copy yet. I see things like Penny Arcade doing strips on it and just think of how angry I'd be if I didn't have it yet.

I just realized what KOTOR is... That game wasn't very good. I have never been so turned off by a fighting system in my life. I truthfully have no idea why people like it so much. If this game is anything like that then I am going to pass this up quicker than chinese food.

People like it for the interesting characters and story.

And the fighting system isn't any worse than a traditional turn-based RPG battle system.

I'm guessing he disliked not having total control, which technically you COULD have, since you can queue up moves for all your people and pause the game at any time.

Either that, or the fact that you miss an awful lot, and the fact that health of players and enemies is balanced in such a way that if you took the same party into the same fight two different times you'd have two wildly different conclusions. I know several people who got annoyed when a fight that was kicking their ass the first few times becomes a breeze with only a few strategy modifications.

                            I didn't mind it because KOTOR's battle system was a slimmed-down version of Baldur's Gate's.

I do want to add that there is VERY little similarity between Mass Effect and KOTOR's battle system. Mass Effect is an action-based battle system. You are actively aiming your guns and firing.

One thing I have decided is that I almost prefer the cooldown system for limiting powers than MP. Think about it; Wouldn't RPGs be more fun if instead of being hampered with running out of MP, you could use abilities as much as you wanted, but had to wait between uses of each? It's just something that I've been noticing lately, that the games I've really been attracted to (minus Dragon Quest) tend not to limit ability usage in battle. SMT does it by making regenerating MP really easy outside battle. This does it with cooldown cycles.

I just wonder sometimes if RPGs are so stuck in the idea of MP that perhaps they should think about new things. I mean cooldown works for MMORPGs, doesn't it?

Yeah, MP is gay. By the middle/end of the game you usually have enough ethers or elixers or whatever the game calls it to justify the use of it anyways, there really ought to be another method of restricting players from spamming powerful abilites in modern RPGs.

This might sound crazy, but something can be good even if you don't personally like it.
