Re: I have Mass Effect.
Ok, let me give you the breakdown as I see it:
You have the three "core" classes:
Soldier - Specializes in all four weapon types; Only class that can wear heavy armor
Tech - Specializes in meddling with technical stuff/party buffs; Also can train in decryption, which is useful for hacking, and hacking can lead to sidequests
Biotic - Specializes in doing damage to enemy with powers as well as buffs/debuffs
Now what does this mean? Specialization in a weapon increases damage and accuracy. Why does this matter? Using the sniper rifle in zoomed mode makes it basically the same as the MGS sniper rifle. That's right; it's shaky cam time! However, as your accuracy increases, the shakiness decreases. Thus, unless you're trained in it, it's nigh unusable.
Accuracy for the other weapons simply gives you a larger reticule. The larger your reticule, the farther off your aim can be for it to still count as a hit. Thus, if you're really skilled you can ignore accuracy, because you'll be going for headshots and the like on your own. If you're not the greatest at action game, like me, then accuracy can be a godsend.
So why does this matter? If you're any class BUT soldier or a soldier hybrid, the only weapon you can specialize in is the pistol. In fact, there's one class that doesn't specialize in any weapons at all!
So let's get to the Hybrid classes:
Vanguard (Biotic/Soldier) - Loses the biotic buffs/debuffs (mostly), but gains the ability to specialize in shotguns as well as pistols. If you pick this class, odds are you'll be frontlining, concentrating mainly on your guns with an assist every now and then from a power.
Infiltrator (Tech/Soldier) - Loses beneficial buffs, but gains the ability to specialize in the sniper rifle. If you enjoy making the enemy's weapon overheat, or the computer by them explode, this is the class for you. Generally you'll try to begin combat with a lucky snipe shot then try to hang back and snipe as much as you can until the enemy gets in close range, at which point you'll whip out your pistol. The problem with the class is that if the enemy you're fighting is completely organic, with no high-tech weapons, your skills are useless.
Sentinel (Tech/Biotic) - Can't specialize in any weapons. I haven't played it, but I'm guessing if you pick this you'll probably be hanging back and letting your allies do most of your fighting for you.
So basically, if you enjoy charging headfirst, go soldier. If you want to play with guns but want some cool powers, go for a soldier hybrid.
One thing I will say so far: I have all but one party member, and although I haven't used the latest one I've got yet, it looks like the NPCs are heavy with the Decryption skill and light on biotic powers, so keep that in mind.
I can now say that I've hit a heavy combat area. I've been in fight after fight for the last 45 minutes of the game, but I'm liking it. I'm just annoyed because I'm supposed to find this item for a subquest and I can't, despite the fact that I'm looking right where my journal tells me to. Frustrating.
I did get a chance to try out the Mako though. It controls VERY flighty. For what is basically a tank, it feels very loose and fast. The controls are also taking some getting used to, what with it controlling like a FPS but slightly skewed since it's third person above. I actually found that it's easier to drive in cannon view than regular view, for me at least.
