if they remove the ability to upgrade the firmware, it'll be safe from all but the super-hardcore people who will tear it apart, and flash the internal memory themselves through complicated hardware mods. it'll also make sony stick with one damn feature set. the PSP's firmware is just fine as it is.

as is, the PSP's entertainment pack comes with everything you need to pirate PSP games.

Doesn't codejunkies make a product that can be used to pirate DS games?

          lots of companies do.

the DS's game medium (cartridges) allows for such easy piracy. of course, the DS has a userbase so large that the piracy doesnt effect it much.

the PSP's userbase is miniscule in comparisson, so piracy hits it VERY hard.

take away the ability to run actual PSP games from the memory stick, and make it impossible to upgrade/rewrite the firmware, and the piraters are screwed unless they want to make complicated hardware mods.

They went with the UMD medium to curb piracy (it's damn near perfect with it's construction), in addition to storage benefits. but with the ability to load entire games off the memory stick, they made it so no one has to bother with the UMD format.

i actually know a guy who sold his ds and bought a psp just so he could play "pirated", or whatever, games.

so they might want to rethink that plan

anyways, blah blah blah, whatever. good games is all a system needs for reasons to own it. all the other **** is just....****.

and the constant updates is one of my biggest gripes about the psp. considering the MONTHS between games i purchase, every time i get a new one, the order of events that follows is something along the lines of "yay! new game! time to play! oh, my software is not at the proper, most current level. i must update if i want to play this, the game i just purchased to play, on this, the system it plays on. fine. i'll update. oh, i have to fully charge this thing, which will take awhile due to it being inactive for a month. i guess i'll come back in a few hours" AND THEN I DON'T COME BACK CAUSE I'VE BEEN PLAYING LINK'S AWAKENING ON MY GAMEBOY FOR THE LAST THREE HOURS WHILE MY DAMN PSP CHARGES JUST SO I CAN UPDATE TO THE LATEST BULL**** WHATEVER TO MAKE SURE I DON'T DO THINGS ON MY PSP THAT I HAVE NEVER AND DON'T EVER PLAN TO DO SO PLAY THE GODDAMN GAME!

Just like PC games, well minus the charging, and the games usually play, just not as well. Congratulations, you purchased a laptop.

Of course the alternative to having firmware upgrades is you having to buy a new system for the upgrade. Or of course them getting it right the first time, but seems that is not the way of the industry these days, or maybe it never was and it's just now becoming apparent through patching. Looks like a lot of QA divisions aren't doing their jobs, or people are too demanding either way.

Re: 60 reasons to own a PSP

I know one of the selling points for PSP was the UMD movies. I'm just wondering how many people have actually bought those things? Are they popular at all?

EDIT: Oh and patching games (on PC) sucks. It makes companies feel that they can get it out fast then just patch it later on, making people play a broken, half-done, game. Although somtime benefical, other times it's just aggrivating.

                But I'm veering off topic.

umd movies are dead, so no, i'm guessing nobody bought them.

i've never had to update my ds.

True, but you do have to buy the browser for it, and from what I hear it's not very good, and won't be able to get an update unless they left room on the cart for it. Certainly not a big deal, but just pointing out that to add new features to it they have to sell them in separate cartridges, or make an entirely new system, though the Lite also fixed some hardware issues as well (like lighting, size, etc). So the ability to upgrade the firmware isn't all bad, but it does lead to a we'll fix it later attitude when forced with tight deadlines.

i...buy my game systems to...play games. not being able to surf the web and manage my stock options isn't a sticking point for me when i wonder "hmmm, will this have fun games on it?"

I agree, just pointing out that firmware upgrades don't have to be the devil, as they can help a system stay more current and error free, in addition to adding new features hopefully for enhanced gameplay.

If DS could do firmware updates, maybe it'd be possible to update it to one friend code per DS instead of per game. That'd be great.
