Here's an example: Say you're using a Mewtwo, a Pokemon that can only be obtainable at Lv.70. Regardless of its level, it will be rounded down to Lv.50 for online. It's the same for online battles in Diamond and Pearl, only you also have the option of rounding them up to Lv.100 in the DS games.
The Stadium games did not round your levels up or down in any way. There were different cups with different level requirements.
Also, yes, you can certainly unlock many more clothing options for your trainers. And in addition, when you beat the game, you can get the accessories of the Colosseum leaders.
I ran into a pretty cool Youtube PBR video in which the user's opponent successfully employs the Gluttony+Belly Drum Linoone strategy that RPG-13 recommended in the other topic.

For those of you concerned about encountering hackers online, thar be good news! PBR has a very strict filtering system that will not allow any shifty Pokemon through, even if the captured location is a slight bit off.

Wait, so you only can have up to level 50 in PBR for online? Well that makes it easier I guess.
Also, yeah it never changed your level in the stadium games, it changed the computer's level. Say you have a 48, 45, and a 53 and the req is 40+ (or it was just the standered gyms where any level goes) or somthing all the computer's pokemon will be level 53.
