I can't read music, but I can play music, much the same way as you described, Smurv. I carry around an ocarina around my neck all the time(Funk can verify that) and whenever I get bored, I play it. If I get a tune stuck in my head, then I usually end up fingering out how to play it. The only thing that sucks about the ocarina is that I only have 1 octave and 1 note to play with and a number of songs require more than 1 octave.
I like it and I've been gradually getting better at it without it feeling like 'work' as you so call it. It's more of a medium to fill in times of boredom.
