The Punisher and Wolverine showed up in 1974. I'd say they had a lot to do with comics moving towards darker stories and the whole anti-hero binge.

yeah i can see maybe thinking metropolis was new york, but thinking gotham has no relation to new york is sort of unusual.



also, as is my understanding, new york city has, among it's many nicknames, "gotham". i don't know if that came before or after the comic one, but either way it sort of proves the point.
