More specifically, do you know of any real sources concerning the auto industry barring development of new eletrical engines? (real sources meaning something in a paper or journal).

Re: Terr, explain the search for alternative energy...
Explain 'eletrical engines'.
Really there's no need for new motors to make EVs viable, nor new better batteries, the technology is here. What's needed is for someone to mass produce an electric car.
There are small businesses that are building electric cars, but:
a) they don't have money to advertise
b) they don't have the HUNDREDS of millions of dollars to pay for government mandated safety tests(which were actually lobbied for by the auto industry in the 70s to kill competition, when cheaper tests could have done just as well)
c) they don't have the machine tools for mass production
Without the above three things, small businesses building EVs will never get around to selling more than 200-300 cars per year, even if millions of people want them, and even if they want to sell millions of them.
Just what information are you looking for sources on? Are you looking for sources on how the auto industry has supressed electric vehicles? I wrote a huge ass report on that 8 months back that covered this subject in brief, with over 90 references(some papers, some books, some journals, some websites). Are you looking for information on developments they tried to supress(ie. battery technology)? You need to clarify what you're asking for. Then I will know how to answer your question.
One place you may want to look is the following topic:

Why this topic was made in The Playground is beyond me though. I'm sure a mod or admin will place it in the Free Forum where it belongs. The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson

A few good sources:
Taken For a Ride: Detroits Big Three and the Politics of Pollution by Jack Doyle has an entire chapter dedicated to this subject.
You may also want to look at some of the California Air Resources Bureau transcripts. One in specific dealing with this subject that comes to mind:
http://www.arb.ca.gov/board/mt/mt090800.txt
A book that covers some attempts to stall the EV(but is not the subject matter of the book) is The Car That Could: The Revolutionary story Behind GM's EV1 by Michael Shnayerson.
Also look up a study funded by Ford Motor Company at Carnegie Mellon University that used false figures to claim an EV battery would cause more pollution than a gas car. That study was false. Here's what the California EPA had to say about it:
http://www.arb.ca.gov/newsrel/nr062295.htm
There have also been numerous newspaper articles on an aspect of this subject. You may want to look at the Sacramento News & Reviews article “Electric Smoke Screen”, and The New York Times, “White House Joins Fight Against Electric Cars”, among other articles.
That little rant I made has loads of sources that it may be beneficial for you to look into and read. The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson
