I've always been a big DB/Z/GT fan. But yeah you just don't put that much thought into the inconsistencies. There's hardly a serial story ever made that doesn't have holes and contradicitons. Especially one that's a translation of an adaptation of a manga series that was revamped and renewed time and again over the course of years. It's a wonder Toriyama managed to remember half the characters' names. In order to enjoy Dragonball you have to just sit back, laugh at the funny parts (intentional or not), fast forward through whichever parts you don't like, and just bask in the homoeroticism of it all (that's mostly in Z). Same goes for all forms of entertainment.
