there should not be a columbus day, it should be changed to lief erickson day, basically we are celebrating a man who was a glorified slave trader.
that picture typically associated with columbus, isn't even columbus, it is an italian noble.
read Frauds, Myths and Legends (I can get you the bibliographical info later if you are interested) it is a book that covers such hoaxes as "ancient astronauts", "the piltdown man", "atlantis" and other fun stuff, they also cover legit topics like the "moundbuilders" (an ancient native american culture that did not seem to be nomadic and built a "city" out of mounds and mud and earth that is believed to house around 40,000).
