I could never do that. Ever.
One of my college professors had a friend who had a chihuahua-poodle mix for a pet. He and his whole family loved that dog like nothing else. One day the man woke up to get the newspaper and found that someone had shot the dog to death with a BB gun and was lying dead in the street. Although the man was politically conservative, instead of calling the police and letting them handle it in the way the authorities handle such things, he found out the neighborhood boy who committed the crime and he made lifelong friends with that boy.
