So my city has a state college, and that college recently got its own radio station. I'm listening this morning and what comes on? The Hyrule Field theme from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Not kidding you. First time I've heard such iconic game music on a radio station. I heard some trumpets/horns and other instruments that hinted it was recorded by professionals in the area rather than the "official version". Which my town's radio station is known for, is local material, both original pieces and covers. But still it was interesting that happened.

Re: Unusual but surely welcome
The only local radio station that I (used) to listen to played at 11:00-1:00 on Wednesday nights and was Black/Death metal. They(a.k.a. one guy with too much time on his hands) slipped a .38 special and Stolen Babies song in there one night, though.
I used to listen to 94 X, but I can only take "Monster" by Skillet and "Enter Sandman" so many times before I start to lose faith in humanity. What's the point of having an emergency response system if you can't provoke the wrath of God?

That's pretty damn cool. Interpretations of classic VG songs can be amazing.
Video Games Live does seem really good stuff in that genre.
Then, sometimes, a studio goes the opposite direction and hires a professional composer and orchestra to create the game's opening theme. And the world rejoices.
