Obama's initiative for gay/lesbian hospital visitation rights
Re: Obama's initiative for gay/lesbian hospital visitation rights
Finally, some progress from this administration. It's about ****ing time. Now if only we could get Obama to stop shilling for the same businesses that mutually supported the Bush admin, and assure that no future administration is going to be able to overturn this small sliver of progress that we have actually had on behalf of civil liberties.

Re: Obama's initiative for gay/lesbian hospital visitation rights
im still surprised that this hasnt been mandated sooner. as a first world country youd think that even this most basic aspect would of been cleared. we are suppose to be accepting, especially in cases of health, and yet here we stand divided by nothing more then a few technicalities on paper.
the lack of rule bending by the hospitals themselves is disheartening. a ruling like this shouldnt even need to be possible. its something the hospitals themselves should recognize without the help of legislature. i wonder how such an archaic rule is even upheld by an organization thats meant to be ahead of progress?
as terr said, i just hope it isnt rendered moot by the next intolerant leader.

The living standard of the average American seems to more closely resemble that of the average Mexican than the average Canadian. Among those industrialized, wealthy nations, when it comes to living standards, the United States is nearly in last place, despite having the most wealth per capita(note the GINI index. That wealth is distributed very unevenly).
The US is rapidly in decline, and our own government seems unconcerned. Even the so-called "liberals" or "leftists" in the U.S. congress are far to the right of Europe's "conservatives", despite that the American population is comprised of many leftists and right libertarians that go almost entirely unrepresented in congress.
This country is in need of serious change toward the center, and aside from this one issue, Obama is failing to deliver. In the United States, the power elite define "healthcare reform" as forcing Americans to purchase insurance from a private company, without actually adressing the problems in our healthcare system; then the neocons(which Fox News tend to label as "centrists" when they are really extreme right) have the audicity to decry it as socialized medicine when it is anything but...
The United States of America will be a 3rd world ****hole before this is all over, and it will probably still be the wealthiest nation on Earth(with half of the wealth concentrated in the hands of about 1000 families).
I seriously hope that if the religious right puts a stop to this one advancement we have seen in decades, that the left and right libertarians both decide to get militant and start systematically dispatching them. This is ridiculous, that basic human rights, have been ignored for so long and such a narrow political view as the neoconservatives have been able to seize so much control of this country when Americans are composed of such a broad array of views.

I wouldn't count on it though.
The real problem with gay issues is that I don't see an easy solution that doesn't involve utterly crushing and outlawing religion. Well, you could establish a theocratic state in America too, but as a highly anti-religious atheist that is no solution at all to me, since I would rather quickly be persecuted as an evil satanic (absurd) agent bent on the destruction of god's will. Religious conservatives unfortunately are going to see this as another attack on their faith, particularly if they have to contribute to this health care. The biggest problem is that Christianity in general sees homosexual realtions as immoral. The more liberal and moderate sects at least can accept that people are born gay, but unfortunatly the more moderate Protestants are facing a lot of internal problems confronting these issues. That's where much of the problem really is, many of the Protestant sects are facing a lot of internal discord over the issues of gay marrage and gay priests. The evangelicals won't bend on the issue and they're experiencing growth from other disaffected Protestants, and the Catholic church atm is too busy using them as scapegoats for their ugly sex scandals. I think we're probably going to have to wait this one out while the old dinosaurs croak and do what we can to make sure the next generation is more open-minded.
Maybe if the more fundamentalist sects of Christianity didn't actually idealize rank ignorance and stupidity as a virtue while demonzing anything even remotely intellectual as infernal wickedness we wouldn't have these problems. They'd be able to accept that homosexuality has natural causes no matter what a bunch of ancient homophobes scribbled down 2000-3000 years ago. But no, knowledge is sin (we were cast out of Paradise for knowledge!) and everything in the Bible is absolutely and uncorruptably true because god spent the whole time whispering in the ears of all the scribes who wrote the scriptures. Never mind that if god really intended for nothing but completely heterosexual relationships, then why are homosexuals, transexuals, hermaphrodites, and people with other sexual imperfections even born if everything is according to some divine plan? Oh I forgot, it's more of our justly deserved punishment for original sin, or maybe the devil is just mucking about again even though he's supposed to be imprisoned in hell.
And attacking the religious right would be very dangerous. The Abrahamic religions tend to have an obsession with martyrdom built into them, and the Christians are feeling glum that's they're the world's biggest religion and no one is feeding them to the lions any more. So they like to feel whatever persecution they can because there's no easy path into heaven for them. Unfortunately, a direct assault on the religious nuts would not just mobilize all of them, but likely a good deal of more moderate minded Christians as well. And I honestly do not believe the more secular minded American would have the same fervor to fight off a militant and radicalized religious right. Fighting them would get very ugly and bloody too, and in the end I fear the only way for secular opposition would survice is if they were led by radical communists or something using conscripted forces against the religious militias that would rise up. I doubt I would enjoy living under a militarized left.
Re: Obama's initiative for gay/lesbian hospital visitation rights
church and state should be separated, thats how law is meant to operate. until this actually happens the government cant easily make decisions that involve rights that the church doesnt believe in. gay rights shouldnt even still be an issue, but its made one by religious believers.
