so my adapter crashes windows - found a cheap cable!

i wanted a device to plug my dex drive into my new computer. i shopped around looking for the best price and i ended up going with future shops dynex serial to usb adapter cable. it was still expensive at 50 bucks but it was 10 bucks cheaper then staples belkin microsoft certified adapter.

right from the get go windows told me it didnt like it, said it wasnt supported and may crash my computer. for 10 dollars saving i thought it wasnt likely to be an issue since i use it rarely and its only running old technology.

seems like this isnt the case. the device will crash every so often when in use but no ill effects have come. seems microsoft is in the business of certifying parts for use with windows, which adds additional cost to the product. so here is the dilemma, should i return this device and go buy the windows certified one for an extra 10 bucks or just keep using the cheaper one?

edit: i just found and bought a 15 buck cable that is the exact same thing as the other. ill return the expensive one tomorrow, and i dont care if this one crashes my computer cause the savings are worth it (plus it seems to be compatible)

whats so confusing about that? it works but causes undesired effects such as system crashes - plus isnt supported by windows.

are you sure the adapter is the reason for the crashes, and not the terribly programmed dexplorer software (which for vista should be run under XP compatability mode and run as an administrator)?

To be fair to the terribly programmed software, vista breaks a whole bunch of stuff.

Anyway Karr you have a terribly complicated decision, let me break it down into a decision matrix:

"10 dollars is worth trying hardware that may not crash windows" => Buy
"10 dollars is not worth trying hardware that may not crash windows" => Don't Buy

Re: so my adapter crashes windows - wtf?

i refuse to use vista so i use xp. dex worked without crashing on my old computer which has similar programs as my current one but im using much better hardware.

the crash happens sometimes when i move data from card to computer. when installing the adapter (came with a plug and play software) windows informed me that since the device is not supported (untested by windows), it may cause system instability.

@alzar: i made this topic because i wanted some additional opinions as to what to do. 10 bucks doesnt seem like a lot, however id rather avoid spending it if the problem is correctable or if it lies not in the adapter but with the dex software itself.

I don't know if you can say it works if it causes your system to crash. Oh wait, yes I do know. If it causes your system to crash, then it doesn't work. Go for the one that is tested and certified to work on a windows system, ya stingy (but lovable) bastard

the 15 buck one i got is working fine and didnt prompt me with any incompatibility errors. i like how somethings solve themselves.
