"Called out of work" means you called work and told them you weren't coming in...which means you'll be out of work...I dont see whats so hard to understand about that.

Maybe he was already working and was calling somebody else that was not in his work place, hence him "calling out of work"
Or maybe there's someone there named "Ofwork" and he's calling him out and is going to fight him and this whole fiasco has been a big typo.
Find a dog, honk it's nose. If you are bothered by this sentence. I guess you're just not cool enough for the noses.
