It's not really a revision to the Bible, if they did that they'd be under fire from jsut about every Christian in the world. As I said earlier, the 7 deadly sins are a man-made (if you believe the Bible is God-breathed), they aren't mentioned in the Bible.

That's probably where I got confused too.

each person decides for themselves how to spend their money. would you say bill gates is going to hell because his product is too successful? people should help out others in need, especially if they have plenty of money, however that choice is up to each person, not the church.

the church institution is too archaic and its applying archaic ideas to modern society that just dont work. the ten commandments where pretty clear what is expected of decent human beings, anything else is just wrongful manipulation to get people to go to confession more.

i really dont like the pope we have now, he cant hold a flame to john paul II, and just seems to do a lot of contradictory things. his beliefs are also not with the current times.
What I don't understand, is say that I got rich. and had like a milltion dollars. Let's also pretend I gave a bunch of the money to charity. Would I still be a sinner? That doesn't make sense.

faith and science can never exist under the same roof so expect both sides to fight each other. science disproves religion, and faith demonizes science. this battle has been going on since the two first formed and will go on forever, since they are polar opposites.
I disagree. Science and religion can exist under the same roof, I'm living proof. (Unless your talking strictly about organizations). I believe in God, but I also base all my beliefs on Science. It was hard, but I found a medium and I'd be happy to go into further detail elsewhere, so as not to snowball this topic.

        Re: 7 new sins!

why is everyone like "LOL EXCESSIVE WEALTH A NEW SIN LOL" when it says it in the bible?

is it really so much to ask that someone has at least a tiny bit of fluency in the subject matter when they are trying to post something about it? most of this thread could have been monkeys slamming their fists into keyboards and we'd have about the same level of coherency about the topic.

if you dont agree with my post, let me make it up for you by contributing to your conversation:

                  Re: 7 new sins!

seriously its not like im trying to condemn all the joke posts because obviously not every discussion is full of real discussion, and eventually all boards really boil down to a mess of inanity and jokes with the occasional serious post popping up here and there, but when the serious posts do happen to pop in, when people start trying to have a discussion its completely retarded to have those serious post be filled with bad information, filled with ignorant opinions, wild sweeping gestures that mean absolutely nothing.

this sort of thing really perpetuates itself. reference the one topic where it got into the macdonalds coffee case, when someone brought it up knowing absolutely nothing about the case, and nearly nothing about the verdict. do you know why stuff like that happens? why people base their opinions and their beliefs on often outright lies? its because they get it from other people who also dont know what they are talking about.

if you dont like me because i try to cleave truth from the lies, then fine. i got a ****load of negative rep when it existed for making stupid statements in the atheists worst nightmare thread, and honestly my arguments there were just as obviously stupid as a lot of the serious posts in this thread, except with your guys posts its dark and sinister and evil because you dont even realize it.

Wow. People, be sure not to have opinions on anything or try to bring stuff up because it just might be wrong and no one is willing to correct anyone in a civil manner.

Where in this topic, did you cleave truth from lies?

i want the church to realize the same truth as it did in europe back in the middle ages that it had to adapt itself to become accepted. the church bent some of the harder doctrines to encompass more believers and that worked nicely. i cannot believe in an institution that teaches tolerance yet discriminates against sexual orientation; that condemns sinners, yet brushes off their own sins; that preaches divine inspiration, yet decides anytime it likes which laws it should live by. i want christanity to align itself with the 21st century, i know the bible is well equipped to bring its meaning and purpose to clearly represent this age. if my religion didnt transcend time then it wouldnt of existed so long, i just want the pope to stop trying to pretend that nothing has changed since the gospels.

the organization of course. individuals can and do live with both science and religion, but the two institutions of science and religion are definatly not compatible. i also found a medium between the two, though it causes plenty of conflictions within myself.

@exo: really, why do you come here to troll? we have opinions which are never right or wrong, and we like to speak them without being condemned for it. no one here has any authority to speak on any of the many subjects we talk about. we do not hold degrees in secular theory, nor any other qualifications that would give us any degree of expertise in the subject. of course we are going to make mistakes, or speak from rumors rather then facts. maybe you havent heard but this is what we call the "internet" which means its not so serious, and filled with people and information which is far from absolute truth.

correcting information is fine when discussing facts, but how you present you case is just as important as the correction your trying to make. even if you come here with any degree of truth, if you insult us or bash us in any way then of course we will not care for what your saying. perhaps you should follow your own advice and cleave the truth to these words here for your own benefit.

                            Re: 7 new sins!

I don't know If I would call religion an institution, but I do believe that most churchs are incompatible with Science. I myself have reached a balance between my faith in God, and my faith in science. Ocassionaly their are conflictions, but I put them aside until they can be resolved.

I haven't been to church in years. I used to attend a Baptist church, and a guest speaker was telling a story about how he drove out a bunch of homosexuals from a sermon by opening up with how it (homosexuality) is an abomination unto the Lord. The part that really bothered me about it was that he was proud of driving them away. I thougt to myself, "What kind of Christian would be proud of driving away people that need to hear the word?" It conflicted with everything I knew Christianity was about.

The whole "gay issue" also didn't sit well with me. Eventually I read an article written by a man who was raised Jewish, became an Atheist, and then a Christian. He proposed the idea that homosexual acts are the sin, not homosexuals themselves. He said that gays (for the sake of brevity) could be more righteous than strait people, if they remained abstinant. He also proposed that these abstinant gays would be more richly rewarded in heaven because they did something that was very difficult. (i.e. Strait people not having gay sex isn't as tough as gay people not having gay sex.)

                            I like that idea better

                              Re: 7 new sins!

i dont believe that being gay or having sex in the way that suits your orientation is any kind of crime. i refuse to accept any religion that touts that kind of illogical, archaic belief as god given gospel. the bible is based in medieval thinking, warped and edited by powerful leaders with an agenda, and some of its original meaning has been lost through translations and time itself. back then woman where considered objects, but you certainly wouldnt give the time of day to any excerpt that mentioned reverting to that way of thinking so why have we not moved sexuality into the same resolution? most of the world has finally realized that homosexuality is no longer taboo, its not a disease or a choice, but its how your born.

what that "minister" did was horrible wrong. you spread the word, not chase away those who wish to hear it. christanity MUST conform to the modern world or people will continue to become disenchanted with it. some other religions out there are also in need of some modernization.
