Re: My Favorite Candidate Gets Treated Like S***

I didn't even know America had a system.

Thought everything was brought upon by some group of guys in the government's shadow.

I can see where both sides are coming from.

I know the system is corrupt. There's lots of things like gerrymandering, super delegates, party endorsement of candidates, and the marginalization of third parties and political outsiders that are all set up to keep control in the hands of the party leaders. When candidates talk about how much experience they have and how beneficial it is, I see it all nothing but a steaming pile of horse****. "Experience" is something my brain translates as "not a member of the political class who spent his or her whole life in office or at least as an intern to a politician". No politician is going to know everything needed to do the job. That's why the president has the cabinet (and governers have similar secretaries under them), even kings and monarchs have ministers under them because they can't do eveything on their own, and because the ministers are there in part to advise the rulers. And it's why the legislators are supposed to debate laws; it's to weigh the pros and cons of a proposed bill before it becomes law.

I still vote, even if I cynically feel it may very well be worthless, because it's still power. I feel that it's better to use that power, no matter how small it is, even if it doesn't help, than to give it up entirely. Lobbyists can through money around as much as they want to get their way, and they frequently do, but they don't have the power to force voters to vote for their pet politician. If enough voters get ****** at a corrupt politician, and someone is willing to stand up and challenge that politician, there is the chance, however small, that the corrupt politician can be booted out of office.

That's why I also agree with those saying that apathy is the problem. The politicians count on apathy to keep the status quo going. As long as blind partisans make up the vast number of voters, then there's no incentive to change.

I also don't believe there's some vast shadowy conspiracy behind our government running things in secret. That would require a level of competance that the government doesn't possess. Many of the problems with the way the country is run IMO is the result of an entrenched bureaucracy. Mid-level bureaucrats often get to the point where they cover things up not because of some evil sinister scheme, but because they're afraid they'll lose their cushy jobs if some screw up is found and they get blamed for it. That's why I tend to favor smaller, more efficient forms of government.

And on the downside, democracy isn't a perfect form of government either. Voters can be fickle and uninformed, and sometimes the what the people want isn't always in their best interest. That may sound smug and elitist, but it's the truth. Too often humanity lets itself be a slave to instincts and desires and abandons anything even remotely resembling reason.

I'm sorry about my posts last night, they weren't quite up to my normal par of standard. I was extremely tired and after a 13 hour sleep, refreshed and can respond with a real response. I apologize to you Valk because I did assume you never tried. I'm sure you did try, but there's a difference between walking up to your congressman and pleading your own case and walking up to your congressman and giving him a petition signed by the community and pleading a case for people in your district. Democracy is all about majority rules, you may have a valid point, but if it's just you, then more than likely the world won' listen. Power in number Valk. I'll add more later, I need to get to class sorry.

Kucinich didn't have a chance anyways, it's not exactly a big deal. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't nearly as malicious as people imagine and they simply wanted the front runners to have more time to speak.

On an unrelated note I hear Nader's getting funded by another right wing think tank to run as a spoiler this year.
"At first it just looked like a picture of a bunch of lily pads, but then I started scraping at it with my pocket knife and the whole painting just sort of spoke to me," Schmidt said. "For the first time, I finally understand what Monet was trying to get across in her work."
