Nixon is right we seemed to hit a time right when computer animation and digital ink and paint took over when things went to hell.
I also agree 100+ episode shows are such a time sink..remember when an Anime show was 24 to maybe possibly 36 episodes, I know there was exceptions to that rule but most Anime these days is like 5 boxsets.

Digital animation techniques aren't responsible for terrible shows. You sounded like you were upset at Macross F for terrible character designs and script. How is that digital animation's fault?

Also, you're patently wrong on that rant on series' length. Just go to Best Buy and you can see most series ARE 24-36 episodes long. Or less. Thirteen episodes is now actually the more common length for a series.

Uh, digital animation is responsible for some terrible shows. It's cheaper, thus we get more crap that wouldn't have made it back in the day (due to the costs of cel animation). And they can cut even more corners in production order to spit it out it faster, which doesn't help the overall product.

It's not the nail in the coffin, but it certainly didn't help an already stagnating industry.

Cheap shows would look cheap even on cels. I haven't ever seen a show with a fantastic script, fantastic character designs, fantastic direction that got ruined because of poor digital (or cel) animation. The entire predicament of the unusual glut of terrible shows right now in Japan is due to increased catering to hardcore fans and low salaries for animators. What you just said is basically that corner-cutting is killing the industry. And I'd agree with that. Just don't use digital animation as a scapegoat. There's quite a few shows that use digital animation to spectacular effect.

Sure, but it hasn't helped the other 93% of shows, which still use it as a crutch.

Cheap shows would look cheap even on cels.

But a show that wasn't worth the cel budget wouldn't have had as much of a chance back in the 80's or 90's. Now that it's digital (cheaper), they can produce more garbage and make those series last longer in order to sell more DVDs, games, merchandise, etc.

It's contributed a lot to the aforementioned stagnation.

The 90's still had a lot of excellent series/movies/OVAs. These days we get even fewer gems.

There is less of a market for feature animated films. But it's also because a lot of them aren't getting licensed. Luckily, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time FINALLY!!! got licensed, so I have that to look forward to.

And the OVA is basically dead. Only a few things of note use that format nowadays.

And later on I can make a list of digitally-animated series I have that I think are gems. :3
