Not surprising. Sudan is a backwards hellhole of a country to begin with. See also: Darfur.

Smurtle, why the **** did you give me a negative rep on this post calling me a racist? Im getting tired of your ******* childish antics, youve given me 5 negatives in the past week for no reason, one was just a "~" for no reason, if you dont like me, put my *** on ignore, plain and simple. You do the same thing to a few other people up here also...

I dont know what I did to **** you off, I could really care less, but if you hate me that much why not just put me on ignore?

And no IRC, this is not about the rep points again, its the point that this guy aint got nothing better to do then get on peoples nerves by harrassing them for no reason.

Im not flaming anyone, Im asking a simple question that me and quite a few other people around here has been wanting to ask.

he gave me the same, thats why i slaped him back with the neg and bashed him publicly here. i dont see anything wrong with saying i like japanese people, i find their "race" to be particularly entertaining for their culture and how they see the world.

i dont expect anything from smurtle, take a look at his posts from 01 and youll see hes still the same asshole then as he is now.

I'm honestly quite curious as to why the children chose the name--were they trying to be mischievously funny, or do they admire that name, or simply like it as a common name, or what? Because it sounds like their parents found this to be in bad taste.

Ironic and delicious, though, that kids in an Islamic-Law country VOTE to call a TEDDY BEAR Mohmmad! Thomas Friedman would eat this up.

I really hope Britain plays aggressively in trying to get the teacher off the hook--not only for the benefit of this innocent teacher, but also to weaken the bonds between religion and law there, if only a bit. Being that the Sudanese government (who is benefitting enormously from their country's idiotic laws, I'm sure) realizes this, I expect them to play power politics as well, unfortunately.

Well, much of their society believes that people shouldn't have the freedom to name an inanimate object "Mohammad." We obviously think that's insane, but we're not part of that society.

Everyone will agree that societies should not allow for murder, but past that it tends to get into gray areas. What should be the penalty--if any--for killing someone else's pet? What about for killing animals in the wild? For killing cows where they're sacred?

Nudity can be a controversial issue, of course... that woman successfully sued after being imprisoned for a day for walking around NYC topless, and the reactions to that were extremely mixed (I for one was very happy for her). I can see the hygenic problems associated with allowing people to ride public buses unclothed, but I also can see the analogy between not letting women walk around topless (most first-world societies) and not letting women walk around with their head uncovered (most Islamic societies).

Anyhow, I don't mean to nit-pick about what you said, I just thought it was a very interesting comment to make in light of this discussion.

i agree with you wave, alot of areas are ambiguous as far as law is concerned. i guess that is why our law has intent taken into concern to prove if a party is guilty of knowingly violating a social stigma or just simply didnt quite realize the implications the act would have. ignorance is never a good defense but this lady clearly had no harmful intentions with what she did. its quite easy for someone not as immersed as the others of that country to make the same mistake. how often would you come across the naming of an inanimate object or pet to realize that the society simply didnt tolerate it?

i would argue that the concept she violated is so far outside the norm that it was beyond the scope of her experience and that of her teaching guild. i doubt anyone had ever thought about the consequence of such a simple act.

i think she should of apologized for the misrepresentation she accidentally made and be let off but these crazy fundamentalists like to punish in the name of their religion. i thank the good lord every day that i was born in such a great country that holds the ideals of humanity in high regard rather then let the tenets of the dominating religion decide what is right.

in a free world you can practice any faith and live with democracy, in a place like sudan where their religion is law there is no freedom from/of religion.

You are entertained by a "race" of people? That makes it sound like they are circus animals, performing for your amusement. Also, I know you used it in quotes, but I think you meant "nationality," not "race."
