I hate Risk and Monopoly. They take forever and are criminally boring.
I found Risk to be disappointing too. Trying to take over regions in that game is a real pain given the way the dice rolls are set up. I haven't played it in years, but I remember taking forever trying to take regions while the other player would just plunk reinforcements down every turn and drag things out. Maybe we were just playing wrong, but it just wasn't that exciting.
The stress factor comes from the fact that while one player might be ahead, the rules let the opponent sort of hold out almost indefinitely instead of just getting the game over with. That's where the fights can come in.
Heroquest was a game for the ages.
Yeah, it's a shame that game didn't last. It was made by Milton Bradley with Games Workshop (they made the figures I think and I they stuck in references to the Warhammer world from what I can tell.) I still have the whole game, the main set and the 4 American expansions. There was two expansions that were released internationally. They both continued where the main set left off. And then there were separate expansions released in America and Europe. The American ones were based on two of the heroes, the Elf and Barbarian, and even had solo quests for those characters and female figures for them.
The main set and the first two quest packs used to go fairly cheap on EBay, I think the main system would sell for around $20, and the quest packs for a similar price, but the Elf and Barbarian quest packs were pretty rare and expensive, they used to go for as much as $100 each. I'm glad I got them when they were still sold.
It was made by the same guys who made Warhammer, even though
there is no mention on the box. It's even got chaos warrior figures!
The Hero's Quest boxes do have the Games Workshop logo on them though. And I even bought a box of Warhammer chaos warriors so I'd have more to throw at my players. They were strong enough to beat the snot out of 4 of them at once.
Using those figures to play D&D is a bootable offense.
Nonsense. I use the stuff for D&D all the time. It's better than nothing.
