Good golly. I work at Subway and we don't usually get people that are obscenely fat, but last Friday this woman came in that had to be about 5'6" and 300lb+ and she ripped open a bag of chips and was rude to me while she munched them down and ordered me around the sandwich unit. It was as if she couldn't wait to get another food item in her mouth. I tried to be as nice as possible, but it was hard.
I've seen people so obscenely fat that they had to use crutches to walk. I really hope they get help and eventually get a little more healthy. Obesity is a real illness in this country, but it is one in which most people suffering it bring upon themselves out of stupidity and/or lack of willpower, often combined with a lack of money and the inability to afford much healthy foods(Since healthy unprocessed foods skyrocketed in price over the past 30 years combined with declining wages).
Whatever the case may be, I have no problem with fat people. The problem is very heavily one of poverty, and also influenced by culture, the individual themselves, and genetics.
The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson
Sadly, most people that are overweight are in such a condition because of lack of self-esteem and acceptance from their peers. This leads to depression which they retreat into and comfort themselves with the love that food gives us. Food is used as a coping mechanism. They feel sad and they eat. They look at their appearance and feel sad because they are fat and overweight, so they eat to make themselves feel better. It's a vicious cycle. The only way to cure this 'problem' is to first address why a person eats in excess. Cure the cause of the problem and then proper diet and exercise can help restore a person to normal health. Unfortunately, years of being put down and laughed at for being overweight will destroy a person's will-power, trapping them in a downward spiral with no way out. You can't fix a person's self-esteem with therapy if they attribute appearance to to happiness. And without being able to feel happy and satisfied with your existance you can never escape the pit you've dug yourself into. It's really quite sad.
To reply to the people that said we needed to not do this study, I agree. But to say the money is better spent on AIDS and cancer research... Bleh..
Studies like that usually cost nothing to the school or the gov't.
While AIDS and Cancer research requires both specialists, specializied facilities and millions of dollars of the course of years. AND.. they are researching it.. But believe or not research and tech can only move so fast, no matter how much money and men you pump into it you can only as go as fast we are humanly capable of producing new ideas, etc..
These people doing this crap, the social psychology, they're the future freelance psychologists, not the grant funded researcher or the university funded professor. In a way it's a publicity stunt for when they open shop.
