What would you say it resembles or aspires to be? The first episode was charming, but a magic loli girl appearing at the end had me skeptical that it was really aiming to do anything different than the rest of the pack.
What does it resemble? Miyazakis work. With far more adult undertones.
What does it aspire to be? Thats a diffcult question to answer. The guy that made it thinks hes 'saving' the anime genre from its over abundance of generic harems and shonen stories. I would watch more Episodes before making a judgment Mora, it develops slowly. If you liked Eureka Seven, you'll like Fractale.
The characters are actually realistic too. With typical anime tropes being discarded purposefully.

I haven't watched an anime in YEARS that wasn't directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
I do plan on watching Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo soon, based solely on the fact that I really enjoyed the material on which it is inspired. I'll post after-thoughts of it if I ever actually get around to watching it.
If you like Miyazaki, you would like this series. Yutaka Yamamoto is the director, his previous work includes Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Lucky Star. He is apparently a bit of a nutcase, and is retiring if Fractale isn't a hit.
