A question for the music peoples

I talked to a friend a little last night about stuff, and he was trying to learn to play the Final Fantasy IV Boss theme (Culex from SMRPG). Tonight I had a friend over talking about guitar stuff too.

I mentioned I had an eleven year old Casio keyboard (CTK-480) but it looks BRAND new cause it's gotten less than <10 hours of play. Got it quite some time ago as a gift and never took any lessons... just played with it here and there but never anything that remotely sounded like music.

I mentioned I could never play the thing, and I can't understand sheet music and all that jazz and could never get into it. He started playing a few songs and I tried to get him to play some game music. He played the openings to some random stuff by just kinda hitting notes til he found the right tune. I thought it was amazing and tried to play the tunes he was playing. While I can't keep up with the correct speed (I'm a little too slow), I know the tunes. I only played as far as he did though.

Then he played the Song of Time from Zelda: OOT. At the very end though, he got it wrong. I asked him to play it again. And again. Then I tried to play the last four notes... I found the right one. He was doing E-Flat > C-Sharp F-Sharp C-Sharp... and instead of F-Sharp he should've used just an F. We popped in the game to check, and sure enough that was it.

He made some comment about "playing by ear" and that the difference between an F and an F-Sharp wasn't much. I said I just know the tune. He tried to get me to do what he was doing, and "guess" the notes to various games. I tried Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Mega Man, the Culex theme.. and I actually DID it. It didn't take long to figure out after screwing with it. If I could just find the first few notes, I could figure it out pretty easily. Granted, I didn't play whole songs, little bits of each maybe 15-30 seconds long... but I was still shocked. I managed to get the first 15 seconds or so of Culex's theme figured out in about two minutes. This whole music ordeal happened in the course of about an hour or so.

Why did he say "play by ear?" I mean, it's not like I can hear a tone and immediately say "oh well that's a G and that's a B and this is an F" or anything. Is it good? Does it mean nothing? I don't know much about music. Does this mean I have musical talent of some sort? I mean, I know it's not like tomorrow I'll be performing a concert or anything, I guess I'm just asking is this stuff that usually takes practice or time, or something that comes natural to a lot of people (mainly those who suck at music).

I wouldn't have thought much about it if it was just me playing with it... but this guy plays guitar and has for years and a few other instruments once in a while for fun, and I called him on a wrong note by doing something involving my ears... and I have no idea what that means or if it even means anything.

    So the question:
Does this mean I have musical talent of some sort?

      Oh yeah... left that out...

Does all that crap in the post mean I have any musical talent... or rather NATURAL musical talent. I don't know what it's defined as... or what's good or bad or meaningless when it comes to music. But that guy acted like it was something worth pursuing.

Talent, maybe. But you have to work, practice, learn, and uh, work, to harness your talent.

Damn. That's what I was scared of. Work. Bah.

I really wish I could make the first post better. I didn't really know how to approach this topic without giving off a "Oh is that good?" feel to it. I hate when people rub in your face things they can do by acting like they don't know it's good or not ("Yeah I beat Halo 2 on Legendary... why, is that hard or something?) or decide to casually bring something up out of the blue and I wanted to be sure people knew in my post I was being serious... I really don't know what it's worth. If anything. And if it is, I sure didn't want to look like a jerk (again, anyway).

Most people I know play by ear instead of learning how to read music.

I never bothered to learn how to read shape notes or sheet music.

I rather play informally through the ear or by reading chords.

I started playing the violin without having any lessons. I would mimic playing a song the first time the group practiced it, then I could usually just play it from memory. My instructor finally noticed that I wasn't turning the pages but I was still playing along just fine.

Later on I was forced to learn how to read music, but I still just memorized the tunes so I didn't have to bother turning pages. It was easier for me to play that way. To each his own, I guess.

I play music by ear. It's called a "musical ear", and people with it seem to be good at music. I did learn to read music, but I usually depend on my musical ear. I've found that a lot of people find it hard to play by ear, so I'd say you have talent.

Are you good with math as well?

Actually yes, I am good at math. I've also got a pretty good memory when it comes to stupid stuff like numbers, passwords, key combinations, etc. About 13 months after I last played Deception I still remembered all my friends passwords to all 8 or 10 profiles... and they each only played about once or twice each when I first got the game. Ironically enough, I couldn't remember MY password.

Well, you've got musical talent more than some people. Playing by ear is a great skill for any musician to have. While having perfect pitch (being able to discern what note is what) is more rare, it is only useful to some people. Being able to play by ear is useful to every musician.
But yeah, you actually have to learn an instrument. :P

Re: A question for the music peoples

the trick to playing by ear is that you are able to remember the notes in your mind without changing key. Very basic music theory (which can be broken in advanced theory) suggests that out of 12 notes, 7 of them will sound good together, while the other 5 will not. there are (in very basic theory) 12 possible key combinations to choose from. looking at a keyboard and playing only the white notes generally means you are playing in the key of C. as ou become familiar with music, any given key may give you a "feeling" of what notes will fit in...

those who are unable or undisciplined will often jump around from one key to another without knowing it.

successfully finding notes from from your own memory of music suggests that you are able to discern the tonal difference between notes, and perhaps the steps in a key. If you were to nurture this, you may find yourself developing skills you never knew you had

Thanks Alutra, I didn't know that stuff about the notes. And sadly... still don't really.

Oh well, I'll figure it out in time. The word "work" turned me off, but I can't help but enjoy myself as I sit here and try to play various songs I know. I've been messing with it for a couple hours now and the time has just flown by.

                            Oh, and here's the keyboard:

It's a little blury, but it's the biggest picture I could find. I see it around a lot strangely enough. I think they used it in some stupid SNL skits. Figured I'd post cause it's a pretty old keyboard and people might not recognize the product number, but the picture instead.

I have a multimoog and a Korg DW-8000...does that count for anything?
