I Kinda Want to Play a MMORPG

I've never played a MMORPG. There, I admit it.

I played Diablo and Diablo II with a bunch of Pavilionites back in the day, and loved every minute of it. That was about all I could take. I tend to get obsessive-compulsive about RPGs, to the point where I'll just sit down and play most of them through in two or three sittings, literally not sleeping or eating or anything until I'm done with them. I have hardly any spare time these days, so I've been trying to play action games and other games that I can breeze through in a short amount of time. I've always kind of skipped the MMORPG thing, because while I'm really interested in trying it, I have this feeling that it would DEVOUR MY SOUL.

Then I had this weird urge to play, like, World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XI today. I don't know where it came from, but it won't go away.

So tell me some stories about it. Which of those two do you prefer, or is there another one that's even better? Has anyone had their lives completely sucked away by them? Do you regret it, or was it awesome? Better yet, has anyone here managed to play one and still function as a normal human being with some sort of active social life? Should I run like hell, or should I give in and try one?

WoW seems more friendly to solo, but FFXI is definitely more popular (although A LOT of work will be involved to make the smallest progress).

I miss my Thief's six pack. But when play becomes work, it's no longer fun.

FFXI more popular? How many users? I know WoW has over 6 million active members... and that sounds like a hell of a lot. But then again, you can get FFXI and two expansion packs for 20 bucks, which includes 30 days of play time.

I'm fairly sure WoW easily has the most subscriptions of all the active MMOs; I think Goufunaki was referring more to Pavilion popularity.

Anyway, I play WoW and it entertains me quite a bit. Guild Wars is a fun distraction, though it's more in the vein of Diablo than a true MMO.

            WoW.

It's not a game you have to devote massive amounts of time to, unless you hit 60 and want epic gear and whatnot.

Easy to solo, and finding a group is rarely hard.

            It's pretty rad.

              WoW : FFXI :: GameFAQs : Pavilion
              ...and that's why.

Yes! Okay, it's not really an MMORPG, but it's still awesome. Saucerors FTW!

If you honestly believe that, then what are you doing "playing" any of the RPG Maker games?

I think he's talking about things intended solely for entertainment.

You could try Hero Online. It's free, but it does seem to be be based largely on grinding, and it's only in beta right now.

I play DDO and it's really just for if you want to be able to play for any amount of time. Finding a group can take anywhere from 1 - 15 minutes and then you can run as many quests as you like. It's all very modularized. There are quests located throughout the city. Do them. There's no exploring other cities. I really play it because I have no free time. It's fun to just hop on and off.

If you want a light MMORPG with an option to both solo and group, and just a fun game to kill time if you don't have much to spend, then City of Heroes and City of Villains is great.

There are enough Pav members playing, including myself.

It doesn't have any item gathering or such, but it is still a fun game. Or you could wait for Phantasy Star Universe that comes out in Oct.

                              Eve online
Unlike all those other games, it is in space, which is like turning your stereo up to eleven

Its like a really big sandbox. you can find people to play with, or you can sit alone by your self and play. best of all, you don't have to be playing to 'level up' so you don't need to grind like in other MMOs
