    Unexpected Wii price backlash?

Nintendo announced today that the U.S. Wii will be no more than $250. to my surprise, a lot of people are like, "I'm not paying that much for a Wii." My reference for this is the Joystiq thread, and that blog is filled w/ Nintendo fanboys, so I was a bit shocked to see that reaction. what did people expect? I guess Nintendo has always released consoles for $250, but I don't see why they wouldn't bump it up to $250 this round. People also know that Wiis are dirt cheap to make, and Nintendo will be making a profit with everyone they sell (unlike PS3 and 360 which are sold for a loss), so those people in the know expect a cheap price.

So let me ask you, what's your limit for the price of a brand new Wii? I'd say, for me, as long as it was under $300, but I knew it wouldn't be that high in the first place.

250 is alot of money, but consoles are never dirt cheap. i don't know if i could afford to pay that right away, but it dosn't send me running for the hills.

i'd still want to buy the system

250 is probably my limit. anything higher and i'd wait for a price drop.

$250 is fine by me. What's wrong with a company selling something that was cheap to make for a bit more? If it's really worth the price then they will sell. It's not Nintendo's fault that Microsoft and Sony can't produce a system they can make a profit from.

I'm with Gray on the $250 limit for new consoles. You end up buying games and other stuff which will increase the price anyway, so they might as well start off with something more reasonable.

I don't think that sony's are sold at a loss. They rather loose money on the first sell of the system, but they get there money from the repairs they do. Plus it is easy for them to repair, considering they only have to throw it at the wall.

But yeah, this is good news. I am happy that the system will not be over 250 dollars. I was really mad when I heard that the ps3 was 600.

I'd say it's a miracle that Nintendo has released all their other major consoles for $200 regardless of inflation over the years. It was bound to catch up with them.

            Hey. It's not $599.

They could price it at $350 and it would still look like a bargain compared to the competition. I don't know what the expectations were, that a new, better console would come out and it would be cheaper than the last generation?

And there's the peace of mind you get when you spend your money that you're getting a fully-functioning system with all its components. You could probably even buy a game and have a reasonable expectation of playing it that day.

People are stupid. Stupid for complaining about prices going up, stupid for spending $500-$600 on a new console.

For myself, I bought a PS2 for $300 so I'd pay that much for one. At this point if they do some kind of bundle for the Wii for $250-$300 I'd probably buy that in a heart beat. For the other two they're going to wait for price jobs or for me to graduate and start getting that "sold out to the man and work for a corporation money".

                  Backlash? ********! $250 isn't $599, it's reasonable.

                      250, or 600.

Well if you think about it you can get one console for $600 or you can get two consoles for just $250 more. That's not a bad deal.

Also it says no more than $250 so it's possible they may still be trying to work it down to $200 or at least closer to it. Either way it is in no way too high. It's a perfectly reasonable price especially considering you're getting something that plays not only Wii and GameCube games but all the NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, TG 16, etc. etc. games on Virtual Console. Anybody who thinks this price is too high needs to have their head examined.

As a massive PS fangirl, I am starting to loose some real faith in them.

That Wii is looking mighty fine to pounce upon right about now.

$250 is a godsend for the ignorant masses.

With an extra game, a peripheral and possibly setting up the virtual console for use, around $300 is a steal compared to Microsoft and Sony's proposition, in which you'll have to spend over $400 just to get a fully functioning system, excluding any extra games and peripherals you'll need, not to mention the negative speculation surrounding the PS3 already.
